Klockstolen i Mariestads domkyrka - fallstudie av en byggprocess under 1700-talet
The belfry in Mariestad Cathedral - a case study of a construction process during the 18th century
Abstract
This thesis focuses on the wooden construction which the bells are supported by in Mariestads
cathedral. The cathedral was built between 1593 – 1625. After a lightning strike 1752 the
belfry and bells were destroyed. The same year the rebuilding of the cathedral begun. The
main questions are how the wooden construction of the belfry was built and how it could have
been erected. The belfry in Mariestads cathedral has three bells that dates from the middle of
the 18th century and the wooden construction is believed to be from the same period. To
document the construction a survey was made by measuring the construction and by
identifying and photographing traces left from the building process. Drawings was made
following up the survey. A model in scale 1:10 was made to test how it could have been
erected. The wooden construction is a timber frame construction made of pine and all the
timbers is hand hewn on four sides. All timbers are joined with mortise and tenon and are
pegged with two pegs. Carpenters’ marks that numbered all the timbers was found. A log that
is hand hewn was found in the belltower and is believed to be part of some kind of lifting aid
used under the construction.
