L-formade spindeltrappor : traditonella utslagningsmetoder

L-shaped newel staircases - traditional drawing techniques

Abstract
This bachelor thesis aim is to shine some light on traditional methods of drawing staircases. Before the breakthrough of technology and machinery that now controls large parts of the stair building industry other more artisanal methods were used to draw and build stairs. Written information about methods of drawing staircases is rather hard to come by and the ones that are available are often largely text based and difficult to understand for the uninitiated. The survey focuses on L-shaped stairs, winder staircases, built with a round newel post in the inside corner. The reason of the interest for this specific type of staircases comes mainly from the lack of information that could be found about how to draw and build them using traditional methods. The knowledge of drawing staircases I had before undertaking this thesis was rather thorough but was exclusively about regular winder staircases built without newel posts. The main question this survey revolves around is based on the lack of information found in literature about how to draw the stair type of interest using traditional methods. To answer the surveys questions two different methods were used. Interviewing and practical attempts. The interview in this survey was conducted with an experienced stair builder generous enough to share his many years of knowledge in the field. The results from the interview and my own knowledge about drawing stairs were combined in practical attempts where the main goal was to find optimized way of drawing the examined stair type. The result of the survey is a job description of how an L-shaped staircase with a round newel post can be drawn. The job description makes use of pictures to help explain and clarify complicated steps along the way. With the help of an appendix in the end of the thesis the hope is that this job description will be easy to follow and understand for the persons interested in learning how to build these types of staircases.
