dc.description | Does the intake of oily fish have an effect on cognitive function in children under ten years of age? – A systematic review article.
Abstract:
Aim: The aim of this systematic review article was to investigate the scientific
basis for whether intake of fatty fish has an effect on cognitive function in
children under ten years of age.
Methods: Searches were conducted in the databases PubMed and Scopus for
randomized controlled trials. The included population was children aged
zero to ten years without a diagnosed disease or disability. The intervention
was oily fish. The outcome measure was cognitive function measured with
the cognition test Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scales of Intelligence,
third edition (WPPSI-III). Studies written in a language other than English or
Swedish were excluded. Studies in which the intervention was supplement
with omega-3 fatty acids, fish oil or fishmeal were also excluded, as well as
animal studies. Final search was conducted on January 25, 2022 with the
keywords "fishes", "cognition", "child", "child, preschool", "cognitive" and
"fish". This resulted in 63 unique search results, four of which were read in
full text. Of these, two studies were included and form the basis for this
systematic review. The articles were reviewed with a review template to
assess the risk of bias designed by the Swedish Agency for Health
Technology Assessment and Assessment of Social Services (SBU).
Reliability was assessed according to Grading of Recommendations,
Assessment, Development and Evaluations (GRADE) for the outcome
measure cognitive function measured with WPPSI-III.
Results: The risk of bias was assessed as low respectively moderate for the included
studies. The results consistently showed that the intake of oily fish does not
have an effect on cognitive function measured with WPPSI-III in children
under ten years of age.
Conclusion: According to GRADE, there is a moderate certainty (+++) that the intake of
oily fish does not have an effect on cognitive function in children under ten
years. | en_US |
Preschool and Primary Scales of Intelligence, third edition (WPPSI-III).
lästes i fulltext.
Tillförlitlighet bedömdes enligt Grading of
Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluations (GRADE) för
| en_US |
