Phase 3 of the EU emission trading system

Abstract
There is a threat to the climate when pollution is constantly increasing with an expansion of human activity. To prevent more damage to the climate, the Kyoto Protocol established legally binding targets of greenhouse gas reduction for industrialized countries, emission trading was one of them. The introduction of EU ETS started in 2005 and its purpose was to use the trading system as an instrument to reach the goal of climate-neutral 2050. EU ETS is a cap-and-trade program where the amount of emission has a cap within the EU. 43 percent of the total emission is freely allocated, and 57 percent is actioned out. There are several different industries included in the system and, in Sweden, the total number of facilities is approximately 750. The thesis aims to discover differences between specific sectors within the industries in the Swedish market. With an independent samples t-test on three different null hypothesis it shows that the industries of electric and district heating and refinery have significant differences in average emission when comparing average emissions to the other industries. The result also shows that electric and district heating emits the most emission in total while refinery emits the most emission per facility.
