The theme of this historical study is based on an enquiry from the Disponentparken located in Grängesberg. They wish to know more about historic carpet beddings that existed in the park around the late 19th century and beginning of the 20th century, in hope of recreating a similar carpet bedding in the future. It was during the second half of the 19th century some of the most complexed flower arrangement called carpet beddings became a part of the Swedish garden design. They featured new exotic plants that been discovered through exploration all over the world and were planted in advanced symmetric formations brought back from the old symmetric styles of the garden history design or influenced from the ideals of the interior design during that time. There’s a lack of knowledge in contemporary literature about historic carpet beddings in Sweden. Through a literature studies of garden handbooks and research of historic archive material of garden journals from second half of the 19th century, this study examines the Swedish carpet beddings during that period. The result of the study demonstrates a compilation with examples of formations and plant materials of Swedish carpet beddings. It also gives a historic background of the time to help understand why the carpet beddings became a popular flower arrangement in private gardens and public parks in Sweden during the second half of the 19th century. To help the Disponentparken get more specific knowledge of the historic carpet beddings in the park, a picture analysis of two photographs picturing some of the old carpet beddings in the park has been made. The analysis together with the knowledge that been collected about Swedish carpet beddings in general, aims to give grounds for a future plantation of a historic carpet bedding in the Disponentparken and for other historic gardens in Sweden.en_US
