dc.description.abstract | Gig economy is a relatively new phenomenon in the Swedish labor market and refers to the types of work in the service sector where the contractors are paid after assignments performed, so-called gigs. There are several variants of gig companies and they differ in how they work, this study will mainly focus on the companies that can be classified as physical gig companies. The phenomenon of gig economics has created mixed opinions but to a large extent lacks research on.
This study aims to investigate whether one can see gig economics as an organization and how the relationship between employers and workers in gig economics can be improved. Toanswer the study's questions, a qualitative study has been conducted with a focus on gaining a broad picture of what the gig economy looks like from different perspectives. The interviewees selected for the study all have a connection to gig economics or gig companies. The interviewees were researchers in the field, employees or managers of the gig companies as well as journalists and writers who wallraffed and then wrote about their experience.
The study shows that there are big differences between different gig companies in different industries. These differences resulted in a more general conclusion about gig jobs and gig companies per se, rather than one specific to a particular company. What the gig companies have in common, however, is that they have a hierarchical structure where the contractors
stand furthest in the pyramid of power. The study also shows that gig companies can to some extent be considered organizations and largely have a basis in being organizations. What is missing is in some cases an acknowledgment from the companies themselves that they have employees, but also that the employees should feel a sense of belonging to the company. Gig companies could also be seen as networks in other respects and that they should therefore rather be seen as a hybrid between them. | en_US |
