Timmerknuten - ett grundrecept

The log joint, a basic recipe

Abstract
This thesis shows constructive relationships that are required for a log joint to make a tight seal and to be constructively reasonable. At the same time, the thesis clarifies where it is possible to be constructively and aesthetically creative in its design. The goal with the thesis is to develop a description model, a basic recipe for log joinery that allows technically and aesthetically motivated variations. The survey is entirely theoretical, which means that 3D modelling is used to examine how the dimensions of the corner notches relate to each other. Dimensions are linked to each other so that small changes have impact throughout the chain of joints. The behaviour of the model is analysed and documented with various forms of illustrations and drawings. The results of the thesis have led to a basic recipe that can be used by log builders or students who want to deepen their knowledge in how the corner notches in a log building works. The idea is also that this theoretical tool should promote creativity and self-thinking.
