Abstract
Background: Mental illness has increased in Sweden as well as in other countries.
Mental illness can lead to common mental disorders such as
depression, anxiety and exhaustion. Focus today is often on
providing the individual tools to reduce their symptoms of mental
illness instead of getting grip of the actual cause of mental illness.
Employers are responsible for employees’ work environment and
for preventing ill health. But what are the conditions for managers
in organizations to support employees with common mental
disorders?
Aim: The aim of the study was to map the research regarding managers'
conditions for supporting employees with common mental disorders
such as exhaustion, anxiety and depression (CMD = Common
Mental Disorders).
Method: The study is a literature study with a systematic search using an
inductive data collection method. 19 studies that met the inclusion
criterias were included in the study.
Result: The findings indicate various factors that influence managers'
conditions to support employees with common mental disorders.
The results can be summarized in 6 categories/themes: Managers'
knowledge & understanding of mental disorders, Education &
competence development around mental disorders, Policies &
guidelines linked to mental disorders, Strategies & support linked to
mental disorders, Managers' attitudes towards mental disorders,
Structure, responsibility & cooperation linked to mental disorders.
Conclusion: The findings indicate that managers' conditions for supporting
employees with common mental disorders is a complex area and the
