SPELA SHORELINE - en diskursteoretisk undersökning av minnesmonumentet över Broder Daniel
Abstract
This essay aims to investigate the conditions of public art in a contemporary
discourseanalysis based on medial sources and social networks, concerning the anonymous
citizeninitiative “The Shorelinestone”, also known as the memorial monument of the
indieband Broder Daniel. With Roland Barthes Semiotics and Chantal & Mouffe's
Discoursetheory, I examine the articulations of different discourses in the field, forming an
antagonism eventually illustrating the conditions of public art today. With the
Shorelinemonument as a floating signifier, I discuss themes such as vandalism and activism,
in the construction of the concepts Guerilla-art and Citizen-initiatives in the public
artdiscourse. With a purpose to illustrate the democratic complexity of artworks such as the
Shorelinemonument, I also pay attention to questions of popular movement and massmedial
public space.
