Abstract
La novela El cuarto de atrás de la escritora española Carmen Martín Gaite ha sido ampliamente
estudiada. La presente tesina investiga la relación entre Carmen, la protagonista de la mencionada obra,
y el espacio cuarto –el cuarto de atrás de la etapa infantil de la protagonista y el cuarto-dormitorio de la
etapa adulta de la protagonista– con el objetivo de determinar la forma como se construyen y
evolucionan. El análisis se centra en dos objetos presentes en ambos cuartos –la cama y los libros– los
que son escudriñados con el método de la hermenéutica y con las teorías de Robert T. Tally y Mieke
Bal. Los resultados muestran que la construcción y la evolución de Carmen y del cuarto ocurren y se
hacen evidentes cuando ella interactúa con la cama y con los libros que se hallan tanto en el cuarto de
atrás como en el cuarto-dormitorio. Asimismo, esta construcción y evolución se dan progresivamente y
se revelan a través de las similitudes y de las diferencias que poseen las camas y los libros.
Description
The novel The Back Room by the Spanish writer Carmen Martín Gaite has been widely studied. The
focus of this thesis is to find the relationship between Carmen, the protagonist of the aforementioned
written work, and the room –the back room of the protagonist's childhood stage and the bedroom of the
protagonist's adult stage– with the aim of determining the way in which they are built and evolve. The
analysis focuses on two objects present in both rooms –the bed and the books– which are scrutinized
with the method of hermeneutics and with the theories of Robert T. Tally and Mieke Bal. The results
show that the construction and evolution of Carmen and the room occur and become evident when she
interacts with the bed and with the books that are found both in the back room and in the bedroom.
Likewise, this construction and evolution occur progressively and are revealed through the similarities
and differences that beds and books have.
