Abstract
In the meeting between horsehair and net making, this thesis project examines the interdependence that arises in the relationship between material and technique. The project consists in an exploration of visual tactility, intrinsic properties of a material and fundamental constructions. The method is designed as an experimental system with the possibilities and limitations of net making as a framework. The artistic process is carried out through a continuous exchange of forming and informing, where the expression of the net structures is allowed to depend on the information they receive from the tools, the material variations, and the hand.
By sourcing horse hair locally, the material gained possesses great heterogeneity regarding shade, shape and thickness. Through net making the individuality of the horse hair is explored in its raw state, its properties and will, how each individual hair influences the next. The investigation spans several different perspectives that have become intertwined throughout the project. The construction of net structures evolves into material studies that relate to scale, light, and movement, which further transitions into spatial investigations. The project is set in a context both historical and contemporary, bringing questions of what it means to be human today
