Abstract

In this comparative study, intelligibility (as measured by SWINT; Swedish Intelligibility Assessment) and self-rated communicative ability (as measured by SOK; a self-report questionnaire concerning communication) were investigated in 29 young adults with repaired cleft lip and palate (CLP) and in 50 age-matched controls. The purpose of the study was to investigate if the outcome of these measures differed between groups and/or with regard to sex, and also to identify possible correlations between SOK and SWINT. Results show that young adults with repaired CLP had a more positive attitude towards their communicative ability than controls, as did men with repaired CLP compared to male controls. Intelligibility did not differ between the two groups. A correlation between degree of intelligibility and self-rated communicative ability was found in young adults with repaired CLP. Further research concerning intelligibility is recommended, as are more qualitative studies investigating perceptions of quality of life and self-concept.
