Abstract

The employment structure consists of different sectors, whose share of the total employment rate is all part of an economic structural conversion according to this thesis applied theoretical approach. A structural conversion, which consist of recurring crises, such as the financial crises in the early 1990s. This crisis and its effect on the Swedish economy is well-documented, while the shortage regarding the effect on a smaller scale, in a local and regional context, provides this thesis purpose. More specifically, a comparison between the two neighbouring towns of Malmö and Lund, will constitute the local contexts in this research. The method to investigate Sweden’s financial crisis in the early 1990s and its effect on the employment structure for Malmö and Lund, consists of previously available research and compiled quantitative data supplied from the Swedish Central Bureau of Statistics, and statistical yearbook of relevance. The result of this research, based on this thesis question, displays a different outcome between Malmö and Lund. All different sectors that are brought up for discussion in the research, is either supported by, or questions, the applied theory of economic structural conversion. Principally the result leaves us with the conclusion that the local and regional context matters in an outcome of a financial crisis and that one single national narrative will not fully explain Sweden’s financial crisis in the early 1990s, in a way that is appliable for the employment structure of each different town or community.
