Item Blodomloppet. Ett förslag på hållbar stadsutveckling. Förändringsprocesser och bevarandets samhällsbildande funktion(2011-06-23) Örn, Tomas; University of Gothenburg/Department of Conservation; Göteborgs universitet/Institutionen för kulturvårdThis thesis on the sustainable urban development has the intent to discuss the conservator’s position in alteration of the built environment. An essential component of the thesis consists of a case study in the form of an entry in an open architectural competition for the development of Furuset, an urban residential area in Norway. The thesis’ discussion is based on two approaches to change and socio-economic transformations, considered being dominant within the heritage theory and practice: the production of ideas and great narratives and conservation as an instrumental tool. Conservation as part of the production of ideas is discussed from the perceived societal need of a cohesive narrative and how this is often achieved with the formal writing of history. Discussion of the instrumental capabilities of conservation practice is based on 1970s idea of cultural heritage, focusing on traditional preservation of single monuments, versus the idea of Integrated Conservation incorporating a larger socio-political process. The thesis discusses the two conservation strategies and their respective problems as well as function in the forming of society. The qualitative case study examines to which extent the two strategies can be combined in a more dynamic way to manage change, without it being necessary to restricting preservation actions to only instrumental functions, nor to limit the production of ideas of conservatism and essentialism. The essay concludes with a discussion of the case study results.Item Exploateringsvilja kontra bevarandeambitioner avseende ”Lyckornas klimatiska kurort och havsbads-anstalt”(2010-06-29) Larsson, Anette; University of Gothenburg/Department of Conservation; Göteborgs universitet/Institutionen för kulturvård”Lyckornas klimatiska kurort och havsbads-anstalt” in Lyckorna, the municipality of Uddevalla, was founded in 1877 by the scotschman Robert Macfie and is one of the later seaside- and health resorts in Sweden. The first public bath in Lyckorna was built in 1842 but the early resort activities were carried out in a small scale. Within the Lyckorna-area, there are plenty of valuable cultural buildings from the time around the turn of the century 1800/1900 in the form of architect drawn summer houses with gardens and other valuable cultural environments, for example various walkways and parks which have been used since the resort days. In addition to the architect drawn houses, there are several houses which are built in a traditional architectural style, for example in the form of so called double houses, often with glassed in porches. This thesis is intended to describe how the municipality of Uddevalla through the use of the Swedish Planning and Building Act has regulated the use of land and water and the shaping of buildings in the Lyckorna-area. This has been done through the preparation of legally binding plans. Such plans may also regulate how valuable cultural buildings and building areas shall be protected.Item Genusperspektiv på kulturmiljövård. En diskussion om genus i bebyggelseantikvarisk verksamhet(2009-11-23T19:15:33Z) Myrin, Terese; University of Gothenburg/Department of Conservation; Göteborgs universitet/Institutionen för kulturvårdThis Mag. thesis discusses how a gender perspective could be implemented in the management of cultural heritage focusing on the built environments in Sweden. The thesis further argues for the need of a gender perspective on the conservation of cultural heritage. The two main approaches, additive through the perspective of the women’s part in history and integrated gender perspective, are thoroughly presented in the thesis. In the additive gender approach built objects that represent women’s experiences and lives are added to a history that traditionally represents men and their experiences. The integrated gender perspective includes a gender in all activities as an instrument in a historic analysis. The gender perspective illustrates the relation between the sexes. Not only does it focus on women but it is also used to analyse men and masculinity. Advantages and disadvantages of these two perspectives are analysed. The thesis also includes a discussion on why a gender perspective is relevant and important in the work of cultural heritage preservation of built environments. A short review of Swedish National board of Antiquities’ (Riksantikvarieämbetet) work with gender perspective is also covered. Finally, the management of cultural heritage focussing on the built environments is compared to the successful work and research of integrating gender approach in historic exhibitions at museums.Item Syntetpolymerbaserade Produkter Inom Svensk Målerikonservering(2010-06-29) Nyström, Ingalill; University of Gothenburg/Department of Conservation; Göteborgs universitet/Institutionen för kulturvårdThis thesis is about synthetic polymers and polymeric products used in the Swedish painting conservation field. The aim has been to accumulate and systematize facts about the synthetic polymers used in conservation: to describe the chemistry of the products, their manufacture and their field of uses. Thereby, I hope that the thesis also will function as a practical user-guide to synthetic products used in the field. The research questions used in the study are: How is the chemistry of these conservation products? What kind of synthetic polymers are used? What additives are used? Do the polymers and the products affect the original material and how do they degrade? Are they reversible? How toxic are they? The thesis consists of two parts. The first part concerns polymeric chemistry in general. It is manly based on textbooks in polymeric chemistry and techniques, and research from the field of conservation. The second part is based on a questionnaire sent to Swedish conservation institutes in order to acquire information about what products are used in conservation. The synthetic polymers are then listed with reference to their product type, as it is described in materials safety data sheets from the producers and articles describing synthetic polymers used in conservation.Item Vallgravsstråket(2010-06-29) Han, Hana; University of Gothenburg/Department of Conservation; Göteborgs universitet/Institutionen för kulturvårdThe subject of empirical study is Vallgravsstråket, an urban space with squares, parks and open spaces that was created in the place of the Gothenburg’s original fortification in the 19th century. The study can be discerned with two moments. The first part unfolds Vallgravsstråket’s obscure historical legibility by looking into the subject’s conditional processes of creating/producing heritage with focus on Vallgravsstråket’s local identity and place-based memory. The second part of the thesis focuses on the area’s operative practicality by studying the consequences of constructing a footbridge over Vallgravsstråket with the help of a morphological analysis. A recurring question involves understanding what makes up Vallgravsstråket and why it is important to preserve it and, for whom. Along these lines, it has been interesting to identify an inconsistent gap between how the area is currently represented, what is commonly stated in legally binding documents and, how the local users evaluate the area. The aim of the study is to unveil different perspectives on Vallgravsstråket in order to obtain a better comprehension of the subject’s cultural-historical, legal and morphological dimensions. The thesis of this dissertation as such, has an inductive nature and grounds from a holistic approach that is motivated by a pluralistic view of reasoning where knowledge cannot be reasoned from one single particular perspective. The dissertation starts out with an intersubjective field study that introduces the area’s ‘urban walls’, ‘urban rooms’ and ‘urban experience’. The thesis then shifts its focus on Vallgravsstråket’s urban development by outlining the significant changes in the history of Gothenburg and analysing the impact of planning interventions. Vallgravsstråket’s urban elements, that is to say, parks, bridges and canal, are evaluated as thematic chapters. The dissertation then exemplifies a qualitative text analysis of legal documents that concern the named area with the purpose of understanding how or why certain approaches have surfaced in debates and researches. After having assessed an adequate empirical background on Vallgravsstråket, the last and final coordinated academic effort has been to experiment with a morphological analytical method both in theory and practice.
