Item A Profession as Enterprise Architect(2015-11-04) BESKER, TERESE; OLSSON, ROLF; IT-universitetet i Göteborg/Tillämpad informationsteknologi; IT University of Gothenburg/Applied Information TechnologyThe present trend shows that Enterprise Architecture (EA) is an essential resource to improve the organizational efficiency, effectiveness, and agility, both in the business and the technology environment. The Enterprise Architect professionals who are working in this area are thus essential for operations in organizational transformation and development, therefore, vital to understand the ambition of this profession. There are several academic studies available concerning EA. However, there are few empirically based studies which in particularly reflect the Enterprise Architect profession. This study, examining the profession of the Enterprise Architect, sheds new light on what these professionals do within their organization on an every-day basis and how this view differs from how the profession is described in existing research. The purpose of this paper is to explore and compare how the Enterprise Architect profession is described both by academics and by empirically collected data. We perceive five topics that are essential to a comprehensive, rich picture of the profession; the role, competence, power, style of acting and main focus. The study is based on an initial literature survey and an empirically based study based on interviews with Enterprise Architects in ten large Swedish organizations. Our interviews show that the architect's work in several aspects is consistent with the literature but in other respects, an evident dissimilarity is revealed. One of the most obvious differences is the architect's mindset in terms of working in a reactive or a proactive way. Our interviews show that architects are working primarily in a reactive approach both in terms of how their roles are described but also in relation to how the EA function is set up. Although it is evidential that most of the architects’ work is based on a reactive basis, the architects claim it would be inappropriate with a purely proactive approach. Nevertheless, the establishment of the EA as a function within the interviewed organizations seems to have been well implemented, where architectural principles are determined as mandatory, while an interesting finding is that major or radical IT investments appears to overrule the architectural principles and is part of top management discretion only.Item A Quality Evaluation of an Android Smartphone Application(2011-09-08) Niknejad, Aida; IT-universitetet i Göteborg/Tillämpad informationsteknologi; IT University of Gothenburg/Applied Information TechnologySmartphones are considered as the new generation of mobile devices. As the popularity of smartphones is increasing, many users tend to use various applications on them. Thus, it is imperative to devote much attention on the quality evaluation of these applications. This concern defined a research topic for Logica to work on quality issues of smartphone applications. With the aid of ISO/IEC 9126 quality model, this thesis aims to evaluate the quality of a prototype which was designed and developed on Android platform. This prototype was a time management application based on Pomodoro technique. This thesis performs the studies on reviewing relevant literatures from two viewpoints: identifying proper solutions to design and develop an Android application and determining product quality measurement of smartphone applications. Furthermore, structured interviews with smartphone application developers and quality team at Logica were used to collect more to address the above viewpoints. Once the prototype was developed, an experiment was designed and run to evaluate the usability of the proposed prototype. The results of the thesis are the implementation of the proposed prototype on Android platform and the measurement of the prototype’s usability. Results obtained from the experiment can lead us to resolve problems associated with usability and find solutions for its improvement.Item A study about internal crisis communication strategies in Swedish private and public companies(2017-09-15) Dzenan, Karic; Institutionen för tillämpad informationsteknologi; Department of Applied Information TechnologyCrisis communication has never been more important as in last years. Nevertheless, its focus both in practice and in theory was majorly directed towards the external component. On the other hand this study wishes to contribute and enhance the visibility and importance of internal crisis communication. This is a comparative study that involves interviews with communication professionals both from public and private companies in Sweden. The focus is directed towards answering study’s research question how internal crisis communication strategies are used in private and public companies? In order to answer this question inductive approach is used and data collected through the use of interview is analysed by the means of grounded theory. Later on the data was compared with most relevant crisis communication theories and existing strategies only to yield most dominant practices and blueprints both in theory and in practice. Study’s results point towards traditional understanding of crisis but rather alternative practical approaches to manage crisis internally. Findings also reveal almost unified character of crisis communication with tendency of internal communication becoming same as external. Furthermore, the impact of organisational culture on internal crisis communication should not be neglected as it is a part of study’s findings. From more theoretical point of view findings suggest the concept of enacted sensemaking in crisis situations to be inseparable from those traditional understandings of crisis and most relevant when it comes to crisis management.Item A study of intercultural management communication Swedish expatriate managers in China(2015-10-06) Zheng, Lixia; IT-universitetet i Göteborg/Tillämpad informationsteknologi; IT University of Gothenburg/Applied Information TechnologyChina as one of emerging economies has attracted a large number of global companies, including Swedish ones, to engage in the financial investments and create many business collaborations cross-national borders. Swedish managers inevitably go to China for some reasons such as long or short-term assignment in local or Swedish organization located in China or negotiation with Chinese business partners. However, many aspects of culture and communication differ between Scandinavian countries and China, such as communication styles, feedback, and leadership styles. Those from Scandinavian countries lay on one extreme of the axis, while those from China lay one side. Thus, this study is focusing on that how Swedish expatriate managers adjust or adopt him/herself in China regarding the aspect of communication and communicative leadership. It is a study of cross-cultural management involving the interaction of culturally different people in the context of organization. The data was collected by in-depth interviews with nine Swedish managers who had worked in China for at least two years in past decade. The interviews lasted 30 to 60 minutes guided by a semi-structured three-part interview questions concerning not only Swedish and Chinese culture differences and similarities but also Swedish management settlement in China. The result indicates that it clearly show that most Swedish managers enjoyed the time when they stayed in China. More importantly, it became obvious that there are more similarities than differences between two countries. Two major similarities are reflected on both Swedish and Chinese trying to avoid direct conflict and being task-orientated. These two similarities are extremely important in an international organization. Based on these two similarities, the collaboration between two countries undoubtedly will go more smoothly once the common goal is achieved. Even for differences, they are diminishing with increasing globalization and development of technology.Item A Systematic Literature Review on the Critical factors that Contribute to Success of Agile Development Projects(2016-09-14) Islam, Mohammad; Institutionen för tillämpad informationsteknologi; Department of Applied Information TechnologyObjective: The objective of this thesis is to identify the critcal success factors in an agile development projects. Research Questions: Two research questions are addressed in this thesis. The questions are: "What factors define success in agile software development" and "How do these factors contribute to success of a project". Methodology: In order to investigate and identify the critical success factors and their relating success attributes, a systematic literature review was conducted. 9 online journal database search engines were used to search for relevant research literature to this thesis, and 24 research studies were chosen. The studies were then filtered by using exclusion criteria. Then in each study, the relevant data was extracted by using keyword searches with keywords being related to the success factors and the success attributes. Finally, the findings were analyzed using frequency analysis to see which factors and attributes contribute to success. Since not many research studies have been conducted on this particular topic, the terminologies and naming conventions seemed tricky. To counter that, various synonyms and search criteria were used to retrieve an accurate result. In addition, detailed reading of some of the research studies were conducted to find additional keywords. Results: In this thesis, it is reported that technical factors are addressed by the most number of papers to be the most important factor, followed by process, organizational, people, and finally project. Almost all the success attributes were addressed by some research studies, with the exception of 1 success attribute that was not addressed by any research study. Conclusion: From the findings of this thesis, it can be concluded that with the exception of one success attribute, all the rest of the success factors and success attributes are relevant for project to success. This thesis provides an insight to the critical success factors and how the relating attributes are described in various projects. The critical success factors are still a relatively unexplored concept in the software engineering field, and further research on the concepts presented in this paper can help put them in practice in agile driven projects to achieve further success.Item A Systematic Review of Automated Software Engineering(2011-09-08) Gegentana; IT-universitetet i Göteborg/Tillämpad informationsteknologi; IT University of Gothenburg/Applied Information TechnologyContext: Automated software engineering is becoming an increasingly important part of Software Engineering. Both fully and partially automated approaches and methods can improve the productivity and quality of software development. Objective: The goal of this study is to identify the current status of the automated software engineering field based on publications in the years 1999 to 2009. The results should be valuable for people who are assessing which automated approaches and methods to implement in their software development. Method: The method used in this study is a systematic review. It is a well-defined method, which can be used to identify, analyze, synthesize, evaluate and compare available and relevant articles on a specific research topic. The attributes and characteristics to extract for each automated approach/method was based on a partial literature in the field and related software engineering fields concerned with automation of human activities. Results: From the 122 published articles selected in the final stage of paper screening and filtering we found 127 automated approaches distributed on 9 areas of Software Engineering. We also provide analysis of these approaches based on the years of publication, automation level of the proposed automated approaches, human activity required for using each approach and their types. Conclusion: Software design was the most prevalent area for research in automated software engineering from 1999 to 2009. Furthermore, 39.4% of automated approaches were deemed as having a low automation level, indicating that much manual work was still left for utilizing the technique. Meanwhile, only a total of 22 required human activities were mentioned for the 127 automated approaches, which indicates that researchers focus on the automation approaches themselves but neglect to consider the level of automation they supply as well as the human activities that are still needed when using them.Item Accelerated digital transformation Through the lens of sensemaking : A case study of a pharmaceutical company(2021-12-08) Caira, Emanuela; Reuter, Liza; Institutionen för tillämpad informationsteknologi; Department of Applied Information TechnologyDigitalisation is a pervasive phenomenon that is challenging firms to radically transform themselves to stay ahead of competition. This study aims to fill the research gap that exists within the field of organisational change and more specifically on accelerated digital transformation. The eight sensemaking mechanisms by Iveroth and Hallencreutz (2016) are used as an analytical lens during the collection and analysis of the data. A qualitative approach in the form of a case study was conducted within the Recruitment department of a global pharmaceutical firm. Data was gathered mainly through semi-structured interviews covering several hierarchical levels of the department. The results of the study show that accelerated digital transformation is an emergent process that requires focus and efforts from several levels of a firm and that time and resources should be allocated on it to succeed. Furthermore, the sensemaking mechanisms of Translation, Stay in motion, Encourage updating and Learning were observed to have a stronger effect on accelerated digital transformation than the others. Middle management is crucial in enabling sensemaking processes and fostering fast change thanks to their situational awareness and knowledge of the teams. Finally, the individual capabilities of learning agility, tech-savvy and change mindset were observed to have a positive effect on accelerated digital transformation.Item Achieving Safe DICOM Software in Medical Devices(2009-06-29T09:37:21Z) Debruyn, Kevin; IT-universitetet i Göteborg/Tillämpad informationsteknologi; IT University of Gothenburg/Applied Information TechnologyThis paper reports on an investigation on how to produce a reliable software component to extract critical information from DICOM files. The component shall manipulate safety-critical medical information, i.e. patient demographics and data specific to radiotherapy treatments including radiation target volumes and doses intensity. Handling such sensitive data can potentially lead to medical errors, and threaten the health of patients. Hence, guaranteeing reliability and safety is an essential part of the development process. Solutions for developing the component from scratch or reusing all or parts of existing systems and libraries will be evaluated and compared. The resulting component will be tested to verify that it satisfies its reliability requirements. Subsequently, the component is to be integrated within an innovating radiotherapy positioning system developed by a Swedish start-up, Micropos. While remaining objective, I will examine how the outcomes of my practical cases converge with what is discovered in the literature: a massive lack of conformance to DICOM exists among medical systems that produce DICOM files. Endeavors by the manufacturers developing medical devices are still required to universalize the interoperability proclaimed by the creators of the standard. Despite that imperfect context, a reliable software component was achieved and is presented in this report.Item AI IN RECRUITMENT A Study on Readiness and Responsibility in the Face of Regulation(2025-06-24) Cekic, Ida; Svan, Moa; Institutionen för tillämpad informationsteknologi; Department of Applied Information TechnologyThis study examines how artificial intelligence (AI) is used in recruitment in Sweden, with a particular emphasis on regulatory compliance, technical complexity, responsibility and understanding. Based on 10 semi-structured interviews with recruiters, the study reveals that AI is most commonly used in screening, generating recommendations, documentation and drafting job advertisements. However, the results show that the screening phase and AI-generated recommendations are subject to the highest regulatory scrutiny, requiring greater human oversight. While human involvement is emphasized in a way that complies with regulatory frameworks such as the AI Act and the GDPR, fully automated AI decisions still occur, specifically in the screening phase. In addition, the findings suggest that what is perceived as human oversight may be superficial during AI-generated recommendations. Trust in AI appears stronger when the output aligns with the recruiter ´s own judgment. This directly conflicts with the AI Act and GDPR, restricting the use of AI in high-risk domains, such as recruitment. Furthermore, the results reveal a lag in organizational readiness through the lack of structured education, restricting recruiters' understanding of the underlying logic of AI systems. These findings reveal a risk that organizations adopt symbolic forms of responsibility, namely accountability and explainability but also human oversight. Consequently, the fairness of recruitment processes risks being questioned. Therefore, this study offers advice for practitioners to ensure a responsible use of AI in recruitment. The advice is: Ensure a deep understanding of AI output logic, invest time and resources and involve lawyers early in the implementation process.Item AI Integration Scaling AI for business model innovation(2022-10-28) Lundblad, Linnea; Olsson, Tilda; Institutionen för tillämpad informationsteknologi; Department of Applied Information TechnologyArtificial Intelligence (AI) is still largely unexplored within information systems research, and most published work remains non-academic (Collins et al., 2021). While there exists some research related to the challenges incumbent organizations have to scale AI, there is little insight to why some succeed. The paper applies a multidimensional framework called the Artificial Intelligence Innovation Maturity Index (AIMI) (Yams et al. (2020) to analyze six AI deployments in European organizations. The purpose of the study was to identify success factors and assess organizations’ maturity to integrate AI for business model innovation. The study conducts a qualitative approach where 7 respondents were interviewed regarding an implemented AI use case. The paper contributes with practical advice to managers of what to consider when leading and investing in AI. The findings indicate that the primary investment focus is dependent on the organization's AI maturity level and considers a short term and long term purpose. The paper contributes to research formation related to applied artificial intelligence, digital transformation, maturity models and business model innovation. Item An ill-fitting dress(2015-09-30) Chàvez Rodriguez, Pamela; IT-universitetet i Göteborg/Tillämpad informationsteknologi; IT University of Gothenburg/Applied Information TechnologyPeople are natural storytellers. From the stories shared around a fire, to the ones spread through mass media, stories have been a way for organizing our experience and making sense of our environment. Stories become increasingly important in a global community where cultures are not easily defined, and the borders between nations become blurred. This study aimed to find evidence of change in the business culture of the state of Chihuahua after Mexico entered globalization, and how business-related practices, assumptions, and identity building processes were affected. Narrative analysis was used to achieve this purpose. Stories were collected through interviews and analyzed according to the use of rhetorical and poetic tropes. The results show that 1) cultural change is evident in the shift from a preference for a tragic plot to a preference for an epic and romantic plot; 2) this change was not linear: Complex narratives are overlapping and interacting with each other; and 3) there is a feeling of dragging behind a preglobalization business culture and identity, which is not compatible with the global community and prevents the exploitation of the business potential in Chihuahua. Globalization provides standardization, norms and regulations that have the potential to take the organizations in Chihuahua from outdated practices to the present-day global community. However, the resistance of the organizations and members of the community to the fully adopt these management practices, rules, regulations and standardizations, causes incompatible processes that fit the business culture like an uncomfortable dress.Item An Intercultural competence study of conflict management style amongst managers in cross-cultural American organizations - QualComm and Genentech(2012-10-05) Alnashi, Samah; IT-universitetet i Göteborg/Tillämpad informationsteknologi; IT University of Gothenburg/Applied Information TechnologyToday nations are not only transferring goods and services, but also people, knowledge, technology and cultures. These new ways of development triggers new concepts to the literature of intercultural interaction and conflict management styles in businesses across the world. Businesses around the world are developing various disciplines to support, teach and increase awareness of intercultural interaction. This study aims to analyze the intercultural interaction and the different conflict management styles that appear in a cross-cultural work setting among managers. The aim is to recognize and further generate ways to become better at understanding, how conflicts occur, are managed and if “face” negotiation theory plays a role into the type of conflict styles different individuals from different cultures use. Sixty (60) managers from two well-known organizations, Genentech and QualComm in California, San Diego were chosen to participate in the study. The questionnaire was conducted to try and identify the effects of cultural on conflict management styles among managers who deal with other managers from other countries. The study revealed that managers from different cultures tend to have different conflict management styles and that “face” plays a big role on what type of styles they use to resolve conflicts. Gender and age were also included as fixed factors which showed a positive correlation to how you deal with cultural interactions at work and conflict management styles. The study of the study is applicable for understanding culture influence on conflict management.Item An investigation of Self-communications role and implications in human life(2012-02-03) Utrera Kollberg, Karla Patricia; IT-universitetet i Göteborg/Tillämpad informationsteknologi; IT University of Gothenburg/Applied Information TechnologyThe aim of this thesis is to explore self-communication´s role and impact on individual’s life and behavior as well as scrutinize possible obstacles for Self-communication to take place. In the other hand a Self-communication model based on and linking theories from both communication and cognition science will be presented to the group to test the effect of a preconceived model on the accomplishment of the activity. The specific objectives were: to explore the participant’s view and attitude before and after the Self-communication activity, the role of writing down memories and emotions, the impact of Self-communication on individual’s life as well as scrutinize the possibility for developing a Self-communication model and the influence of a preconceived model on the achievement of the activity. The study was conducted in Gothenburg. The data was collected through open discussions (I), interviews (II & IV) and Self-reporting (III); a pre and post study (IV & V) was carried out to detect possible alterations of the attitude of the participants after the activity. Statistical data was not collected because of lack of time but mostly because the midpoint of the investigation was deepness instead for size. The investigators goal was to acquire deep understanding and knowledge about Self-communication and the surrounding elements; not to scrutinize its impact on a large size term. To avoid the placebo effect and biased results quota sampling (I) was implemented and a comparison group of individuals followed the study separately and under different space and time related conditions. Triangulation was also implemented to test the findings which provided the researcher important elements that otherwise would be missed. The investigation revealed different angles and dimensions of Self-communication its potential and influence on behavior. Prerequisites for attitudes of the participants toward and for Self-communication to take place were established. Parallel findings showed, among other aspects, evidence for a possible coupling between CSR regulations, manager’s view of emotions at workplace and the co-workers attitude toward Self-communication. Further studies on a lengthy term basis including biochemical test of the participants, for example variation of stress hormones during the intervention as well as a comparison of cultures, more extensive range of ages groups and observation of group dynamics; could provide the scientific community with deeper and more stable knowledge of Self-communications implications and impact.Item Analysis of the Agile Deployment(2010-02-10T08:52:50Z) Chen, Yi-Lin; IT-universitetet i Göteborg/Tillämpad informationsteknologi; IT University of Gothenburg/Applied Information TechnologyNowadays, software project management is becoming more and more important since a project needs an organized plan to follow through. There are two famous models in this area, which are Waterfall Process Model and Agile Software Development. The concept of the Waterfall Process Model is that the requirement analysis has to be done in the beginning phase, whereas, the Agile Software Development emphasizes that the requirements are changeable throughout the process. Thus, it seems that Agile Software Development is paid more attention to among software development companies because of the advantage of flexibility and the allowance of requirements change. However, the Agile Software Development is not suitable for every type of projects and it requires an experienced manager. Therefore, some questions about the Agile Software Development may occur. For example, is the Agile Software Development able to fulfill project managers’ needs? Do project managers encounter any problems while executing the Agile Development Framework? In my master thesis, the usage of the Agile Software Development used among various companies will be revealed. Further, suggestions for those companies with the benefit of literature study would also be brought up since the companies may face some unexpected problems during using the Agile Development Framework. Item Application Portfolio Management(2008-06-27T11:41:13Z) Kellerman, Jimmi; Löfgren, Patrik; IT-universitetet i Göteborg/Tillämpad informationsteknologi; IT University of Gothenburg/Applied Information TechnologyMaintaining a sound and meaningful portfolio of applications is a struggle for many organizations. Applications are developed in-house, bought in and added through mergers and acquisitions in a continuous and often uncontrolled manner. The scientific literature on the subject of Application Portfolio Management (APM) is mainly focused on matrices, which are adequate for obtaining an overview but not sufficient for reaching informed decisions about how to deal with an application. The goal of this study has been to find key principles which can be used to successfully manage an application portfolio and to find out how these principles can support decisions about the destiny of an application. Our investigation has showed (I) That Business Value, Functional Value, Technical Quality and Cost are key principles for deciding the destiny of an application. (II) That decisions related to Application Portfolio Management imply transforming information about the state of the application into action while the key principles give a notion of state. The relevant actions that occur are to remove the application completely (Remove), to leave the application as it is (Remain), to transform the application (Redevelop), or to replace the application with an alternative (Replace). (III) The key principles have been used as a foundation for the design of the Framework for Application Destiny Determination (FADD) which, in a functional and intelligable way can decide the destiny of an application. The intention of the framework is to help managers reach better informed decisions about the destiny of applications in the portfolio, and the usefullness, and integrity of the framework was evaluated on two applications which implied that the framework is satisfying for decision-makers in the organization where this assessment was carried out.Item Architectural Support for Openness in Mobile Software Platforms(2010-09-24) Anvaari, Mohsen; IT-universitetet i Göteborg/Tillämpad informationsteknologi; IT University of Gothenburg/Applied Information TechnologyIntroduction: The answer to the frequently asked question “how open is a software platform” is not binary; especially when it comes to software platforms for mobile devices. The openness of these platforms is determined by the openness strategy of a software producing organization. The decision to open up a platform, however, determines the degree of freedom for third parties to adopt the platform for commercial opportunities. Objective: The aim of this thesis is identification of the openness strategies of the main mobile platforms based on their architecture. Methodology: The openness strategies are uncovered using literature review and several qualitative interviews with mobile application developers. Results: An architectural openness model, several architectural openness factors and identification of openness strategies in the main mobile platforms are results of this thesis. Conclusions: The proposed architectural openness model shows how the openness strategies of mobile platform suppliers affect the software architecture of the platforms. Architectural openness factors demonstrate how open the mobile software platforms are. Finally based on the model and the factors, the openness degree of five main mobile platforms is indentified. Audience: Researchers of the mobile software community, mobile software platform suppliers, application developers and architects could benefit from using the results of this thesis.Item Archive of Fear and Love - On the discourse of history, memory and nostalgia in contemporary art(2011-02-28) Olsson, Lars; IT-universitetet i Göteborg/Tillämpad informationsteknologi; IT University of Gothenburg/Applied Information TechnologyIn my master thesis project, I deal with the ongoing discourse in contemporary art on archive, memory, nostalgia and history. I am making different versions of archival “total” installations dealing with nuclear power, fear, hope and connections between the political and the private. Starting out with the appropriation of found texts, objects, photos and film footage merged with personal memories I rework the material – transforming it, bending it, adding to it and making new connections between the objects. The aim is to both deconstruct and reconstruct the past in order to offer alternative historical accounts and also putting the search light on the power structures and societal norms that make up the foundations of established historical research. Whose history is being written and what is excluded? I incorporate elements and fragments of life that I as a historian would have found irrelevant, and thereby open up for a more “true” and democratic history where the viewer visiting my installations will become a co-producer of the work. My installations are made up of mixed media: video, painting, sculpture, found objects and texts. In my artistic process theories of art, culture and society are important sources of inspiration. On the other hand, the strongest driving forces for me to do art are in the physical materiality and the practical search process of the work itself.
