Item “A ROOM FOR OUR OWN”. Queer memories and feelings in the archival practices of Queerrörelsens Arkiv och Bibliotek (Archive and Library of the Queer Movement) in Gothenburg/Sweden(2019-07-08) Borges Freitas, Camila; University of Gothenburg/Department of Cultural Sciences; Göteborgs universitet/Institutionen för kulturvetenskaperThis thesis departs from the case study of the Queerrörelsens Arkiv och Bibliotek (QRAB) [In English: Archive and Library of the Queer Movement], located in Gothenburg/Sweden, to discuss how queer memories and feelings are embedded in queer archives. It focuses in some of QRAB’s practices, such as: the structure and organization of the archive, the membership, the processes of collection and cataloguing of materials, the external activities, and the relationship with the public and other organizations. From the analysis of these practices, the thesis proposes a theoretical discussion about memory, silence and remembrance, inspired by the literature that has been produced in the last two decades about queer archives. The thesis also addresses the issue of archives in a broader perspective, proposing a reflection about the role of memory and memory institutions in society, such as their influence in knowledge production, community-building and activism. The analysis also focuses on how memories, knowledge and narratives about queer people, cultures and movements are produced within queer archives and how different temporalities are intertwined in those places and projects. Besides, it offers an interpretation on how these archival practices express resistance against dominant and normative discourses.Item An Ace Theory of Relationships: Asexuality and Narratives of Relationship Norms(2022-10-17) Olsson, Limes; University of Gothenburg/Department of Cultural Sciences; Göteborgs universitet/Institutionen för kulturvetenskaperAsexuality studies is an emergent transdisciplinary field with many gaps to fill. This thesis aims to address asexual individuals’ own stories and perspectives on relationships and the norms that surround them. Utilizing semi-structured interviews and the theory of queer phenomenology the thesis sets out to give space to often overlooked and underrepresented points of view. The material gives rise to two main themes, that of an asexual perspective on norms, as well as that of language, both as a tool for resistance and self-identification, but also as something that creates uncomfortable restraints.Item Acid Realities. How Science Enacts the Psychedelic Experience(2019-07-01) Toper, Simon; University of Gothenburg/Department of Cultural Sciences; Göteborgs universitet/Institutionen för kulturvetenskaperThe present work has explored how the psychedelic experience is discursively reproduced in contemporary psychological- and neuroscientific research. In focus was scientific articles detailing experimental human studies with LSD, or comparative studies pertaining to subjects previous psychedelic experiences and psychedelic drug use. Departing from the doctrine of set and setting and Karen Barad’s performative approach to ontology, the emergence of the psychedelic experiences was conceived as entangled with the conditions for its observation. In the context of contemporary psychedelic science, the phenomenon is shown to materialize through quantitative measures of subjective experience and a neuroscientific-psychoanalytical reconfiguration of renowned discourses in psychedelic culture.Item Algorithmic Injustice: Predictive Policing and Profiling in the Netherlands – the Top600 and Top400 approaches(2024-06-19) Anastasio, Carloruggero; University of Gothenburg/Department of Cultural Sciences; Göteborgs universitet/Institutionen för kulturvetenskaperThis thesis is located within the emerging intersections between feminist critique and algorithmic injustice, with a specific focus on predictive policing. By employing feminist theoretical perspectives on governmentality, the non-neutrality of science and statistics, phenomenology and structural injustice, it problematizes Top600 and Top400 (AKA Veilig Alternatief), two algorithmic tools that Amsterdam police and institutions use for the identification and risk assessment of potential perpetrators and repeat offenders of high impact crimes. These tools are marked by a known over-representation of Dutch-Moroccan men and minors, with a lower socio-economic status, mild-to-borderline intellectual disabilities, and from segregated neighbourhoods. Through a reading, inspired by critical law studies, of the official regulations of personal data usage by Top600 and Top400, and through a review of literature concerning them, the thesis problematizes the gap between their promised and factual outcomes, questioning the fairness of their targeting. It asks what practices and structures specific to algorithmic usage and policing are involved and potentially aggravating, how the relations between the tools and human actors are articulated and what biases and distortions they entail. The thesis concludes with considerations about the legal frameworks in which they function, especially in light of the new AI Act in the EU.Item ALGORITMISK INTERVENTION Om kulturarbetares arbete med Instagram(2019-10-10) Gustavsson, Linn; University of Gothenburg/Department of Cultural Sciences; Göteborgs universitet/Institutionen för kulturvetenskaperThe topic of this study is the introduction of social networking sites as an arena for personal advertising in the culture industries. Through a case study on cultural workers’ digital labour on Instagram, the study examines the ways in which a social networking site such as Instagram disciplines its users with regard to labour time as well as cultural production. The empirical data consist of interviews with cultural workers who use Instagram as a platform for personal marketing. A Marxist framework is applied to interpret the labour that cultural workers carry out in order to become visible on Instagram. In addition to this, the study uses the concept of discipline, interpreting the technical infrastructure of Instagram as a disciplinary technique. The study shows that cultural workers are compelled to continuously spend time networking and monitoring their personal brands on Instagram in order to optimize visibility and thereby increase their job opportunities. The technical infrastructure of Instagram disciplines its users to construct a publicizable persona, to network affectively and to create a personal niche. Furthermore, the study shows that Instagram dictates when and how a user should interact on the platform in order to maximize visibility. For the cultural worker, these tasks account for longer working days while at the same time being uncompensated labour. With regard to cultural production, the study shows that the technical infrastructure of Instagram aggravates critical cultural production. This is due to the way this technical infrastructure rewards content which is in line with Instagram’s goals. The results also show a difference in attitude towards this labour in men and women. Where women embrace the narrative of using Instagram as vehicle for marketing, men resist this label to a higher degree.Item ”ALLA MÄNNISKOR ÄLSKAR OSS SÅ LÄNGE VI TILLHÖR DEM” - En studie av relationen mellan människor och människoliknande robotar i Westworld och Äkta Människor.(2018-04-12) forslund, Emelie; University of Gothenburg/Department of Cultural Sciences; Göteborgs universitet/Institutionen för kulturvetenskaperSUMMARY: In this study the goal has been to analyze how the relationship between humans and robots are represented in two science fiction series; Westworld and Real Humans (Äkta Människor). Based on the theories of Stuart Hall about representation, Julie Wosk’s book My fair laides and Gorman Beauchamps article The Frankenstein complex and Asimov’s Robots, I have studied how the humanlike robots are represented and how the myths of the Frankenstein complex and the myth of Pygmalion are represented in the two series. The conclusions that could be drawn from this analysis was that there where many reproductions of the typical sci-fi myths and racial and gender stereotypes in the representations of the robots as the “other”. But there were also some more complex representations of the relation between robots and humans in the series. Item Allt bara försvann – en studie av KP-webbens forum som kulturarv(2022-05-03) Eires, Edith; Parchakova, Daria; University of Gothenburg/Department of Cultural Sciences; Göteborgs universitet/Institutionen för kulturvetenskaperThe purpose of this thesis is to examine the cultural practices of children on the internet forum known as KP-webben (2007-2012) from the perspective of a cultural heritage. A decade after its closing the social and cultural impact of the forum is at a risk of being lost, pointing to known issues in the preservation of born digital heritage. The forum’s status as children’s culture is also discussed as a risk factor in the prioritization of digital heritage preservation. By collecting memories of the forum from former members, through a questionnaire, as well as analyzing the media coverage of the closing of the forum in 2012, we aim to present ways in which the story of KP-webben may yet be preserved. Through this we also suggest ways in which traditional analog research methods can be applied for the preservation of digital heritage.Item ALLYSHIP AMONG COMMUNITIES Narratives from the Queer Community and the Roller Derby Community(2018-06-20) Skoglund, Sofia; University of Gothenburg/Department of Cultural Sciences; Göteborgs universitet/Institutionen för kulturvetenskaperThis thesis investigated narratives of allyship within and between the queer community and the roller derby community. The thesis is an ethnographic interview study and through six interviews with people of the communities it studied how the interview participants understand the concept of allyship and what it means to be an ally for them. Furthermore, the thesis discuss how the interview participants do allyship within and between the communities they move within. Inspired by Ahlstedt (2016) the thesis circulate around narratives and uses a narrative analysis. I conclude that allyship means to stand united and come together; to listen, relearn and support. Furthermore I understand that the interview participants interpret being an ally as understanding one’s position from an intersectional perspective. From their ‘I’ and their own alliance, they ally with others. Vulnerability is a center concept in the discussion of how they do allyship. The creation of ‘us’ and a ‘we’ is another theme that shows how the allyship is done. Political values and statements are ways of creating alliances, political ‘we’ are constructed by delimitation to ‘they’. By making statements and putting themselves on the political map, political alliances within and between the communities are constructed. Item Alternativ: Om viljan att trampa ny mark(2010-12-13) Axelsson, Linnéa; University of Gothenburg/Department of Cultural Sciences; Göteborgs universitet/Institutionen för kulturvetenskaperThis essay revolves around the organization Mobile Art Production, MAP, and their art exhibition Street View shown on Kungsportsavenyn, Gothenburg two weeks in April 2010. Being an alternative to traditional art institutions, MAP sets out goals for their activities and the aim of the essay is to examine whether the main goals of the organization were fulfilled through the exhibition. In Street View six Swedish artists participated with a total of seven artworks. The theoretical framework is formed using Arthur C. Dantos today classic essay ”The Art World”, Anne Ring Petersens definition of installation art and Nicolas Bourriauds term and book Relational Aesthetics. A deeper understanding of the artworks necessary for the conclusions is reached by a thorough description and analysis of each artwork using semiotics as a tool. In the end, some organizational goals proved to be achieved, while others remained unfulfilled. Item Anna Ancher och kvinnlighetens rum: en komparativ studie av Anna Anchers och Vilhelm Hammershøis genremotiv(2025-01-28) Byström, Sabina; University of Gothenburg/Department of Cultural Sciences; Göteborgs universitet/Institutionen för kulturvetenskaperWith Denmark’s modern breakthrough came an increasing number of female painters, among them Anna Ancher (1859-1935). A popular motif for artists of both genders at the turn of the twentieth century was the interior of the private home. The purpose of this thesis is to analyse how gender roles are displayed in Anna Ancher’s paintings of interiors with a lone female figure by comparison to Anna Ancher’s male contemporary Vilhelm Hammershøi (1864-1916). The visual material was analysed by the method known as reception aesthetics. Griselda Pollock’s theoretical conceptions from Modernity and the spaces of femininity was used to understand the material from a feminist perspective. The results reveal that gender roles are both confirmed and negated in the paintings by Anna Ancher. Item ”Det anstår mig inte att göra mig mindre än jag är” - skönhetsidealet och den kvinnliga grotesken i textanalyser av Kerstin Ekmans Grand Final i skojarbranschen, Muriel Barberys Igelkottens elegans och Majgull Axelssons Moderspassion(2013-10-11) Holm, Carina; University of Gothenburg/Department of Cultural Sciences; Göteborgs universitet/Institutionen för kulturvetenskaperThe purpose of this paper is to make a feminist textual analysis of three female protagonists in contemporary novels in order to demonstrate representations of ”skeva” female bodies, deviant from beauty-, slender and age norms. The analysis is based on an intersectional perspective which demonstrates the interaction between body, sex, gender, class, sexuality and age. The theoretical material used are class theories by Bourdieu and Skeggs, performative theories by Butler, theories of grotesque realism by Bachtin and the female grotesque by Russo and Lundberg. The characters all belong to the genre of the female grotesque which manifests a feminist protest and a free zone within patriarchal power structures. To ”cite” gender wrong, as Butler suggests, seems to create gender dislocation able to include unfeminine, aging, lower class female representations as protagonists in literature.Item Anti-genus i Sverige - En analys av Ivar Arpis kritik av genusvetenskapen(2018-04-12) Lindgren, Adam; University of Gothenburg/Department of Cultural Sciences; Göteborgs universitet/Institutionen för kulturvetenskaperAs the recently published scientific anthology Anti-Gender Campaigns in Europe shows, antigender movements have been on a constant rise throughout Europe since the 1990s and are now a well-established part of the political landscape in numerous countries. In countries that haven’t seen the rise of an anti-gender movement however, the same discourses used to mobilize against gender issues in the countries that have can be found nonetheless. One such case is Sweden, where several academics and editorial writes have criticized, among other things, the scientific field of Gender Studies. In this thesis, a series of six texts by editorial writer Ivar Arpi of the Swedish newspaper Svenska Dagbladet are analysed. In the texts, Arpi criticizes the field of Gender Studies, claiming it to be non-scientific and dogmatic in its striving to integrate its theories in public institutions and in every subject across the academy. Through the theory of escape mechanisms presented by psychoanalyst Erich Fromm, as well as the theory of situated knowledge presented by feminist scholar Donna Haraway and the theoretical framework of intersectionality, this thesis examines the discourses about Gender Studies, science, knowledge and gender present in Arpi’s texts and contextualizes them by pointing to similar discourses present in anti-gender movements across Europe. The analysis shows that Arpi criticizes Gender Studies from a positivist perspective, claiming it to be a form of ideology rather than science because of its lack of biological theories about the differences in behavior and preferences between men and women. The analysis is concluded by discussing why there has not yet emerged a Swedish anti-gender movement.Item Antiestetik - En studie kring musiksmak, värderingar och sociala strukturer inom hardcorescenen(2013-09-13) Brengesjö, Frida; University of Gothenburg/Department of Cultural Sciences; Göteborgs universitet/Institutionen för kulturvetenskaperThrough participant observation in a local promoter group of hardcore punk shows in Gothenburg and qualitative interviews with its members I have investigated links between taste in music, values and social structures in the hardcore punk scene. The theoretical framework of this essay is built upon the concept of subcultural capital, which is adapted from Pierre Bourdieu and developed by Sarah Thornton and Keith Kahn-Harris. The result shows how members among the hardcore punk scene create and preserve distinction towards others, while the distinction becomes important benchmarks for including and excluding practices in the scene. En teoretiserande analys av Vi och Dom i David Väyrynens Marken(2018-04-12) Johansson-Mars, Robert; University of Gothenburg/Department of Cultural Sciences; Göteborgs universitet/Institutionen för kulturvetenskaperThis essay examines the construction of Us and Them in Swedish author David Väyrynen's poetry collection Marken (2017). These two groups can basically be identified as rural/northern and urban/southern. My aim with this essay has been to examine how – besides from the purely geographic conditions – these identities are being constructured. By applying a close reading method I have analysed how the social and discoursive practices of the subject constitute the distinctions between identities. The identifications with one or another given subject position occur in relation to the Other. Thus, the collective identitites are constituted by combinations of discourses and distinctions, which exist in the lingual content of utterances as well as in the narrative and the literary structure.
