Item Hitch-hiker’s guide to the EU bureaucracy eller Praktisk EU-kunskap EU 1400 15 hp Abstract(2010-02-24T12:26:39Z) Omstedt, BrittItem Introducing electronic books at Göteborg University(2001) Cavallin, Mats; Björklund, CarinGöteborg University Library has signed a contract with netLibrary providing users on the University’s network access to 500 copyrighted electronic books. These electronic books represent “the third wave” at our Digital Library- the earlier "waves" of resource networking were bibliographic databases and electronic journals. The project is funded by the university board and was started in 2001 after testing and preparations during the fall of 2000. The only realistic alternative for the library was found to be netLibrary. The process started with a collection evaluation resulting in the creation of a list of titles appropriate for acquisition. Negotiations with netlibrary followed and a contract was signed in February 2001. The service was launched over the University’s network in March 2001. After the local introduction of the netLibrary electronic books at the library the project work will continue with forming a eBook consortium. A study of other ebook alternatives will also be carried through. The current project will be evaluated on the basis of end-user experience.Item Introduction to Academic Writing from an Academic Literacies Approach(2014) Eklund Heinonen, Maria; Jorum, IkaIn our paper we present a pilot project were we introduce new students to read, write and search for academic texts. We assume an ‘academic literacies’ approach, where these activities are seen as social practices that have to be practically acquired in authentic, meaningful contexts within the disciplines, rather than in separate courses and other support structures.Item Literacies for academic and professional purposes: Two collaboration projects with the University Library(2014) Jorum, Ika; Eklund Heinonen, MariaAcademic literacies among high school students and university students have been a highly discussed topic for several years in Sweden as well as other countries. Results of PISA show that high school students’ reading skills deteriorate and university teachers have given alarming reports on students’ decreasing abilities on the critical assessment of sources and academic writing. In Sweden the new curriculum for high schools sharpens the demands on students to develop a critical and scientific approach and a main learning outcome is that high school students shall ‘have the ability to critically examine and assess what they see, hear and read’ and that they ‘can use books, library resources and modern technology as a tool in the search for knowledge, communication, creativity and learning’ (Curriculum for the Upper Secondary School 2011, p. 8f). The new curriculum is also a concern for Higher Education (HE) since it is of great importance that high school students are well prepared for University studies. The fact that more heterogenous groups of students coming from different linguistic and socio-cultural contexts get access to HE, has meant that teachers need to design new pedagogical approaches that take socially situated circumstances into account. In this paper we will present two projects conducted at Södertörn University where the University Library has been involved in focusing both on students’ academic literacies and the connection between academic and professional practice. One project is an Introduction to academic writing and concerns new students. The other one concerns teacher candidates and aims to prepare them for their future professions as high school teachers. The purpose of this paper is to explore how the University Library can collaborate with other institutions to support students to develop academic literacies that are useful for both their studies and for their future professional practice.Item Metoder och verktyg för utvärdering av kursinslag i informationskompetens(2014) Petterson, Karin; Pernler, TobiasItem Putting a National Portal for Undergraduate Theses into Production(Peeters Publishing ISBN 90-429-1645-1, 2005-06) Linde, Peter; Björklund, Carin; Svensson, AinaThis paper discusses processes and experiences gained from creating a national portal (Uppsök) for Swedish undergraduate theses, using a common metadata model and set structure with agreements on semantics on top of OAI-PMH and harvesting from several data providers into a central service provider at the Swedish Royal Library.Item Self-Archiving in practice: What do the researchers say and is there any pain alleviation?(2009-06) Linde, Peter; Björklund, Carin; Eriksson, Jörgen; Svensson, AinaThe purpose of the study was to increase self-archiving of scientific articles in Swedish open archives and thus contribute to the dissemination and increased visibility of Swedish research and to a greater impact for the individual researcher. We wanted to find out what obstacles may occur in the self-archiving process and how the database SHERPA/RoMEO functions as support for control of the publishers’ conditions. We engaged 40 researchers at 7 Swedish institutes of higher education to self-archive their peer-reviewed journal articles from the last 5 years. The result was that 140 publications were self-archived in the open archives of these universities and university colleges. After the self-archiving was carried out we followed up on the researchers’ experiences and viewpoints in the form of oral interviews. We have found several imperfections and problems in the process of self-archiving. These issues are discussed and then we conclude with suggestions for measures to take, which we believe are crucial to making self-archiving generally accepted in the world of research and therefore increasing the dissemination of research results.
