Moderna drottningar – moderna drottningroller? Veckopressens skildringar av drottningroller 1905–1980
(2022-10-14) Sandin, Linnea; University of Gothenburg / Department of Historical Studies; Göteborgs universitet / Institutionen för historiska studier
This essay deals with four queen consorts and their queenship to a couple of Kings of Sweden 1905–1980 in women ́s magazines. The aim of the essay is to analyze how the different roles of the queens changed in relation to a new and modern ideal for women: “the modern woman”. According to previous studies, the queenship consists of two roles: mother and wife. These roles have proved to be difficult to change and have almost been the same for over 1000 years. According to me, the roles of the queens have one private sphere and one public sphere. The survey showed that all queens were described as having fulfilled and had both the private and public motherhood and wifehood. During the 20th century, the women ́s magazines received more private details about the queen, her family and herself, even when the queen was out in public. A modern queen and queenship had, according to the magazines and my analysis, a profession that she had chosen by herself, which consisted of representing the monarchy and charity work. A modern queen chose to get married to a king and give birth to children.

Mosslikens liv och död Encounters i norra Europa under förromersk järnålder
(2020-01-21) Gabrielsson, Marianne; University of Gothenburg / Department of Historical Studies; Göteborgs universitet / Institutionen för historiska studier
Abstract The purpose is to examine 17 bog bodies in the north-west of Europe, from the perspective of encounters. All bog bodies are considered as deviants from the social consensus. Focus will be on clothing, hair styles, attributes, corporality and violence – in order the find any geographic indications of encounters, the relation between the violated bodies and new practises, and what new interpretations can be made from the results. The main findings are: ▪ A strong relation between practises to choose and sacrifice individuals of certain characteristics, and the bog as transformer and reviver. ▪ Both body as well as bog function as actant, narrating the story of body, bog and practice. ▪ Traces of cultural hybridity type 2 as old practices still remain but are partly being transformed into new variants. Further research will discuss the bog symbolising both present and future, the spectators and those who selected the bodies

    Lust och plåga
(2019-10-16) Persson, Eva; University of Gothenburg / Department of Historical Studies; Göteborgs universitet / Institutionen för historiska studier

(2019-06-26) Wilke, Stina; University of Gothenburg / Department of Historical Studies; Göteborgs universitet / Institutionen för historiska studier
In this thesis I will discuss questions concerning the possibilities for women to reach power and influence. My investigation is based on Roman funeral speeches laudationes and adressed to five women, Popilia, Julia, Cornelia, Turia and Murdia, during the late republican period. The most important question is: Did this funeral speeches demonstrate a new way of looking at female importance in private and public life or were theese speeches only a new possibility for men to use women in their struggle for political and personal influence? Subordinate questions are whether funeral speeches to women were new phenomenons and what we know about the content of the speeches. My investigation is based on Yvonne Hirdmans theory of the gendersystem. I will argue that upperclasswomen in the late republic had greater abilities and were more visible in private and public life. This phenomena was realized by the men and their intentions, when making the euligies, were primarily to gain political advantages for themselves. The eulogy to Turia had another character. In the inscription her husband lauded and described her actions in the public ”male” sphere but at the same time praised her female qualities, something very important to stress, as her female qualities legitimized her ”male” behaviour in public.

”liksom Cato om Cartagos murar”: Erfarenhet och förväntan i Samfundet I.I: Judiska Intresset 1841–1875
(2019-06-24) Carlesson, Jens; University of Gothenburg / Department of Historical Studies; Göteborgs universitet / Institutionen för historiska studier
This thesis examines the secret Samfundet I.I: Judiska Intresset (Society I.I: the Jewish Cause) which was founded in 1841 in Stockholm and opened a chapter in Gothenburg the same year. Its goal was to fight for emancipation and against anti-Judaism. Concepts such as “Jew” and “Swede of the Mosaic faith” were part of this struggle and are examined in this thesis. The methods applied are contextualisation, text analysis, and mapping the members as well as their network and strategies. Reinhart Koselleck’s concepts of ‘Space of experience’ and ‘Horizon of expectation’ is applied to both the concepts and the Society. Antonina Kloskowska’s ‘bivalence’ and ‘polyvalence’ are added to Zygmunt Bauman’s theories about ‘the conceptual Jew’ and ‘ambivalence’ which opens for a wider understanding. The findings of this thesis present that the Jewish Cause can be linked to other advocates of emancipation in Europe, such as Gabriel Riesser, who was elected to be an honorary member of the Society. Their main strategies were networking, writing articles and interacting with people of power. The members of the Society had polyvalent identities – they considered themselves both fully Jewish and fully Swedish – but had an ambivalent relation to the rest of the society, mainly due to the antiJewish sentiment of the Swedish public. This also explains the reluctance towards using the term ‘Jew’ to define themselves in public, preferring the term ‘Swede of the Mosaic faith’. However, this was not the case in their own meetings, and they had no issues with calling themselves ‘Jew’ amongst coreligionists. The Society’s Space of experience was mainly compiled by their accumulated knowledge of other struggles for equal rights in the rest of Europe, but also Jewish history. Their Horizon of expectation was Sweden with freedom of religion, a place where one’s rights did not depend on one’s religious affiliation. I claim that their struggle was a part of the dismantling of the theocratic structure of Sweden and that Samfundet I.I contributed to the liberalization of the Swedish society.

    Herrschaftswissen i det svenska atomprogrammet 1945 – 1972
(2006) Hill, Niklas; University of Gothenburg / Department of Historical Studies; Göteborgs universitet / Institutionen för historiska studier
