Item Juxtaposition, Form and Intervals of Meaning : Essayistic Montage in Lucky People Center International (1998)(2025-07-02) Halldin, Anton; University of Gothenburg/Department of Cultural Sciences; Göteborgs universitet/Institutionen för kulturvetenskaperThis thesis examines Lucky People Center International (Erik Pauser and Johan Söderberg, 1998) through the lens of the audiovisual essay, focusing particularly on montage, fragmentation and non-verbal thought. Rather than viewing the film as a conventional documentary, this study analyses it as an essayistic film, drawing on theoretical frameworks from Theodor W. Adorno, Dziga Vertov, Gilles Deleuze and Laura Rascaroli. The analysis identifies key essayistic strategies in the film's construct, such as juxtaposition, sonic interstice and visual rhythm, and explores how meaning emerges not through narrative synthesis but through disjunctive, dialectical relations between sound, image and voice. Particular attention is given to how the film handles spatiality, archival material and poetic argumentation. The argument of the thesis is that a form of cinematic thinking that privileges ambiguity, multiplicity, and fragmentation as productive conditions for audiovisual thought is exemplified by Lucky People Center International.Item ...nästan som en i familjen(2025-05-14) Norrmo, Neta; University of Gothenburg/Department of Cultural Sciences; Göteborgs universitet/Institutionen för kulturvetenskaperIn the essay, an iconologic analysis is made on the videowork ...nästan som en i familjen by Astrid Göransson, with support from Margareta Rossholm Lagerlöf's theories on experience and insight, Karl Hansson 's theories on figurality and Vivian Sobchack's theories on morphing. The videoworic is a coal animation which artisanally has been drawn in a real room and then filmed for animation. The analysis draws on how the artist abolish our concept of history by mixing now and then, as well as attributing iconologic works of art in the story. A great emphasis is made on the sensuous experience and the work of the hand; both in the making of the film and the depiction of objects in the same. This materiality opens up towards existential questions of belief and their place in our present time. The work is compared to an altar piece in its layout, which is put in relation to the montage-technique ofthe film. The question, if analyses of videoworks and films of art can be enrichened by methods within the field of art theory and history, is answered by showing how the work is part of an art-historical context which is widening the understanding and the experience of it. This is compared to how videoworks previously has been examined with methods within the field of film theory. The work as such is in constant motion through morphing and transformations, and here starts a discussion on boundary crossing between various ways of working with, and depicting motion picture in a time when the concept of art in itself is under change. The question of contents, whether the work mirrors Sweden's transformation from an agrarian society to a modern society, widens. New questions rises in regard to which degree structures from the past lives on in new shapes. Item Conjunction of the spheres. The struggle for hegemony in the English language online reception of Netflix adaption: The Witcher.(2024-02-06) R. Kern, Sarah; University of Gothenburg/Department of Cultural Sciences; Göteborgs universitet/Institutionen för kulturvetenskaperThis essay uses the concepts of convergence culture, transmedia and hegemony, to understand the struggles within the English language reception to Netflix Tv production “The Witcher.” In order to help the reader, the essay presents the background to the larger Witcher franchise, as well as standard debates and issues within the fantasy genre, the role-playing-game genre and convergence culture.Item Messages from the deep: A reception study of Denis Villeneuve's Dune(2024-02-06) R. Kern, Sarah; University of Gothenburg/Department of Cultural Sciences; Göteborgs universitet/Institutionen för kulturvetenskaperThis essay uses Pierre Bourdieus habitus, symbolic capital, Social fields, Stuart Halls representation theory and Encoding/Decoding system, as well as Henry Jenkins concept of convergence culture and media convergence, to conduct a reception study of Denis Villeneuves 2021 adaption of the science fiction movie Dune. The material collected for the reception study is collected in the form of reviews and features from experts in cinema, juxtaposed against material collected from YouTube in the form of reviews, reaction videos and video essays from social groups sectioned around cinephiles and science fiction fandom. In the reaction-video format, amateur viewers with a personal interest in cinema, but without strong affiliation to large collectives in cinema, is also included. As the material is presented, this essay seeks to map out the distinguishing attributes of a multi-platform discourse where critics and audience meet, as well as tracing what strategies that are put to use in its interpretive practices. The conclusion confirms previous knowledge about the dissimilar and shattered character of the discourse, where social fields never meet, and the struggle for meaning and power with other fields rarely occurs. The speed at which professional criticism is produce have consequences that trickle down through the converging media. There is a lack of negotiated modes in longer format from film experts. Comparative approaches in film criticism has consequences for an already disparate discourse. The consequence of this is that viewers interested in talking about the movie must seek out fandom to conduct a holistic discourse about the movie. But, fandoms are governed by struggles of power and meaning of their own, which hurts some groups more than others – such as women that tend to be silenced in a lot of science fiction discourse. There is a didactic mode to the discourse on YouTube, reaction videos, especially if held between several people cooperating and talking through their interpretation, is an example of that.Item GarageBand eller Logic Pro? En studie i föreställningar om professionalitet och konsten att välja arbetsredskap inom digital musikproduktion(2023-10-04) Winerö, Fredrik; University of Gothenburg/Department of Cultural Sciences; Göteborgs universitet/Institutionen för kulturvetenskaperGarageBand and Logic Pro are Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs) developed by Apple for recording and producing music. The former comes for free with every Mac, iPhone or iPad while the latter comes with a price tag and are marketed to the professionals. Although Logic Pro has more features, GarageBand has gradually become more advanced to the point where the average consumer can make a recording that sounds professional on their iPhone. This democratization of advanced technology challenges the status and identity of the professional music producer, which in turn can make their choice of DAW important for reasons beyond their technical requirements. This thesis investigates to what extent the professionals view of music technology is guided by technical reasoning related to the actual production of music, versus social reasoning related to discourses about what it means to be a professional. Using the theory of discursive fields, wherein discourses competes about giving meaning to a discipline, I analyze interviews with professionals using Apple products and their reasoning in relation to GarageBand and Logic Pro. My study demonstrates that there’s a correlation between the notion of professionalism and marketing within the discursive field of music production. In other words: To be fully recognized as a professional, you probably need to use Logic Pro – even if GarageBand meets your technical requirements. It also demonstrates how notions about professionalism and attitudes towards music technology can be related to gender.Item ”Veni, vidi, vinjett” – en studie om hur åskådare uppfattar, tolkar och reagerar på kända och okända vinjetter till tv-serier(2022-04-06) Johansson, Josephine; University of Gothenburg/Department of Cultural Sciences; Göteborgs universitet/Institutionen för kulturvetenskaperThe purpose of this essay is to reveal how eight informants perceive and experience both known and unknown show openings for tv-series and how they describe this in terms of thoughts, feelings and experiences. This aim was reached through qualitative interviews with the informants with some guided questions where they watched the selected show openings and talked about them as they wished. Before the second viewing of the selected show openings, the informant was instructed to hit the pause-button if something in the audio-visual material caught their attention. This essay builds its theoretical base on different research in musicology, it stretches over multiple fields such as audio-visual meaning, phenomenology, and simple musical analysis. Each show opening has been analysed regarding to these musical parameters: tempo, tonality, dynamics, pitch, harmony, timbre, tone approaches (attack) and rhythm. This essay has a slightly greater emphasis on the audio rather than the visual. In many cases, the informants noticed the same or similar things, and also had similar thoughts regarding what they saw. Every informant has given me their own description of their experience, these descriptions were short, long or somewhat in-between. This shows how diverse the human multimodal experience is: sound and image combined in a complex structure of meaning-making elements.Item Barns och ungas tillgång till kultur - En studie om strukturer, handlingsutrymme och agens i Göteborgs Stad(2022-03-16) Ahlqvist, Petra; University of Gothenburg/Department of Cultural Sciences; Göteborgs universitet/Institutionen för kulturvetenskaperArticle 31 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child emphasizes that all children have the right to participate fully in cultural and artistic life. The goal has been to investigate how the City of Gothenburg works with the issue that all children should have the opportunity to participate. In the essay, I have interviewed people who work with art and culture for children and young people and studied some of the governing documents Gothenburg works with. The aim was to find out how the City of Gothenburg works to ensure that all children and young people have access to art and culture. With the help of the structuring theory, the work has consisted of seeing who has the agency, the opportunity for social action and how the discursive and practical consciousness is seen. What became a key word was equality as several of the initiatives in the city's Plan for Children and Young Culture focused on creating a more equal relationship.Item MUSIKEN I TOMAS TRANSTRÖMERS DIKTNING - EN STUDIE I VERBAL MUSIK(2020-01-07) Forslund, Carita; University of Gothenburg/Department of Cultural Sciences; Göteborgs universitet/Institutionen för kulturvetenskaperThe poetry of the Nobel Prize Laureate Tomas Tranströmer (1931–2015) is well known for its richness of musical references and components. The poet himself was a high level amateur pianist, and he was even promoted an honorable membership of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music. Until this thesis was written, the poetry of Tranströmer’s has not been in focus of any musicological studies as far as I know. This thesis proposes a categorisation of the different functions of music in Tranströmer’s poems. A total of 63 poems out of 235 have been identified with some kind of musical content, that is about 27 percent of the complete catalogue of Tranströmer’s poems. Most poems that were identified with a musical content could be connected to more than one of the musical categories. In order to understand how Tranströmer uses music in his poetry, theories by literary scholars Steven Paul Scher (his theory on verbal music) and Werner Wolf (his three forms for ”musicalisation” of literature) have been applied. With this thesis, my aim is to add a musicological perspective to a research field which (surprisingly) is dominated by literary studies. Musicological studies would definitely broaden and deepen the understandning of the meaning of music in literature.Item FUNK’N’ROSES? EN MUSIKTEORETISK STUDIE AV FUNK I HEAVY METAL(2018-08-01) Berg, Daniel; University of Gothenburg/Department of Cultural Sciences; Göteborgs universitet/Institutionen för kulturvetenskaperItem Den relationella estetiken till Sverige. Hur begreppet relationell estetik tas emot i en svensk konstkontext.(2017-10-05) Glasberg Blomqvist, Ann-Charlotte; University of Gothenburg/Department of Cultural Sciences; Göteborgs universitet/Institutionen för kulturvetenskaperThe thesis examines how and when the concept of relational aesthetics, coined by curator Nicolas Bourriuad, was introduced and established in Sweden in the 1990s. By researching art magazines and daily newspapers, I look at how the concept became effective in a Swedish art context. An analyzis of the concept is made through discourse analysis, mainly from Ernesto Laclau & Chantal Mouffes theory and Norman Faircloughs Critical Discourse Analysis. To understand the social aspect of the events I also use Bruno Latours Actor Network Theory (ANT). Relational aesthetics is understood as a discourse within the discursive field of contemporary art, where the concept of ’reality’, central in both relational aesthetics and the Swedish and international art debate at the time, functions as nodal point.Item Rörelse och rytm i Lage Lindells bildskapande - fallstudie av Umeåväggen(2017-06-02) Thornberg, Per; University of Gothenburg/Department of Cultural Sciences; Göteborgs universitet/Institutionen för kulturvetenskaperThis thesis examines rhythm and movement in the visual art by Swedish artist Lage Lindell (1920-1980), in the form of a case study of his mural painting ”Umeåväggen” at the University of Umeå, 1972. The analysis are grounded in theories of performativity and reception aesthetics. The focus lies on the meeting between the artwork itself and its beholder. In what way has Lindell’s own experiences of drawing and graphics affected his paintings? Connections and degrees of convergence between Lindell’s art and jazz music and improvisation complement the examination.Item Publiken som material och om risken att misslyckas - en undersökning av Marina Abramović performativa verk 512 Hours på Serpentine Gallery i London 2014 utifrån idé/upplevelse.(2016-10-17) Jill, Lindström; University of Gothenburg/Department of Cultural Sciences; Göteborgs universitet/Institutionen för kulturvetenskaper2014 Marina Abramović made her performance 512 Hours at Serpentine Galleries in London. I will in this work of art look at the role of the audience, since Abramović herself points out that the work consists of the audience. If that is the case I want to find out how this is done. In what way is the artist “leading” the audience and how much freedom is left for the audience? The idea behind the work 512 Hours is to give “nothing” to the audience, says Abramović. By “nothing” she referees to the term “Shunyata” used by the Buddhist ́s which means something like filled emptiness. I ́ll talk about experiences of the work from my own point of view, since I visited it in July 2014, some critic ́s and other visitors thoughts and Abramović ́s own intentions and experiences of it. I will also compare the role of the audience in this work with earlier works of Abramović and suggest an interpretation based on stigmata.Item Smaken är som baken - En kvalitativ studie av hur musiksmak formas och delas(2016-06-21) Dahlgren, Ragnar; University of Gothenburg/Department of Cultural Sciences; Göteborgs universitet/Institutionen för kulturvetenskaperThis thesis aims to investigate how individuals understand and value music in the context of producing taste in music. Through interviews, community posts regarding Spotify and old concert reviews this research considers experience, learning and environment to be key factors in making the distinction between good and bad music. The induvial perception can explain why we think differently, while the correlation between the socially communicated taste and the tunes that are considered pleasurable not always is perfect.Item Filmen i Albanien. Bildnings- eller propagandaverktyg.(2016-04-05) Gecaj, Vranin; University of Gothenburg/Department of Cultural Sciences; Göteborgs universitet/Institutionen för kulturvetenskaperThis essay will examine historically the Albanian Cinematography through four different periods. The first period will examine the years between 1905-1918´s and treats the early years of Albanian Cinematography. During this period Albania had been occupied by the Ottoman Empire for the last 450 years and in 1912 the state of Albania was created. The second period will examine the year´s between 1918-1945, when different countries such as the Austro-Hungarian Empire, fascist Italy and Nazi Germany occupied Albania. The essay will show how did this period influenced the Cinematography in Albania. The third period will examine the years between 1945-1990, the period is known of it isolated communist rule or as the cold war era. It is after 1945 that the Albanian National Cinematography develops. The fourth period will cover 1990´s the post-cold war period. During this last period, the Albanian Cinematography dealt with difficulties. This paper is a contribute within the Film Studies about the Albanian Cinematography in the Goteborg’s University and it will try to answer two main questions. The first question is: was the Cinematography in Albania in the service of the different regimes during the 1900? The second question to answer is: did the film had an educating role in Albanian society as the domestic literature claims? During the study of Albanian Cinematography I had to double check the sources in order to be certain about the facts that was published in this essay. I used the “critical eye” when i examined the sources to avoid being the messenger of the particular regime. I came to two conclusions: The film was used by the different regimes to legitimize their own rule in Albania but they couldn´t stop the film´s power as a part of the education process. The history of Albanian Cinematography is particular because it was influenced by different film styles and regimes during the 1900´s and has gained its own film identity. The historical film has become the future film.Item Wor(l)ds and silences - Tracing feminism in the Swedish foreign aid(2014-09-19) Ström, Emma; University of Gothenburg/Department of Cultural Sciences; Göteborgs universitet/Institutionen för kulturvetenskaperThis thesis sets out to discursively investigate how gender equality is represented and made in the new platform for the Swedish foreign aid that was adopted by the government in March 2014. It does so by tracing what feminist features are made visible as well as invisible in the approaches, targets and objectives of gender equality. The thesis combines the “What’s the problem represented to be”-approach to policy analysis with a postcolonial feminist perspective in general and the concept of catachresis in particular. Apart from studying the platform itself, the thesis also uses some of the responses to the platform from organization working in the field of gender and development. The reading of the organizations’ responses reveals the struggle for the interpretative power over what type of knowledge is produced and made prominent in the policy. The thesis finds that the components of gender equality that emerge are congruent to a neoliberal ideology in which gender equality is, essentially, represented as smart economics and as an efficient approach to reach other development goals. The feminist ideology that pushed gender issues into the development agenda in the first place, is distorted and depoliticized. The catachrestic use of the components of gender equality in the new platform for the Swedish foreign aid, thus, manifests a reproduction of the neoliberal ideology in the work for gender equality within the field of development.Item KONSTEN ATT KONSUMERA - En kvalitativ studie om föreställningar, materialitet och identitet inom Every Day Carry(2014-06-12) Johansson, Felicia; University of Gothenburg/Department of Cultural Sciences; Göteborgs universitet/Institutionen för kulturvetenskaperThe purpose of this thesis is to study how today’s consumer society can be understood from an analysis of the phenomenon Every Day Carry (EDC). The aim is thus to problematize the daily use of the artifacts that surrounds us and investigate how these can be understood as networks of human and non-human actors, aswell as identity- and meaning-making practices in today’s consumer society. The theoretical and methodical framework is built upon an eclectic variety of consumptiontheories, Michel Callon’s, John Law’s and Bruno Latour’s work on Actor-Network-Theory, Discourse analysis inspired by Michel Foucault, Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe and an ethnographic methodology specifically adapted for online research. The empirical material consists of photographs and commentaries from two EDC blogs aswell as commentaries regarding EDC from a commentary field on Youtube.com. These are analyzed together with materials in the form of a calendar from the magazine Faktum, internet articles and relevant previous studies relating to EDC. From the material networks of human and non-human actors appears, which is shown to have an important role in how EDC is performed and how identity- and meaning-making thereby are discoursively negotiated, defined and reproduced. EDC is also shown to be a powerful subversive marketing strategy, that allows people to both consume products, meaning, identities and each other. It also shows how people, in power relations, adopt or become assigned different subject positions, which are linked to how a specific conception of gender and class identity, and how specific worldviews regarding them, are discoursively negotiated, defined and reproduced. Item Stadens förändrade funktion - En ideologikritisk studie av Göteborgs översiktliga planering mellan 1959 och 2011(2013-12-20) Westerström, Anders; University of Gothenburg/Department of Cultural Sciences; Göteborgs universitet/Institutionen för kulturvetenskaperThe present master thesis in culture studies is an analysis of Gothenburg city planning ideology between 1959 and 2011. The question at issue is understanding the divergence between postwar and contemporary city planning ideology. Using Karl Marx’s value form theory on capital, the material basis for the changing conditions of city planning is examined. In the study it is argued that postwar city planning was entirely adjusted to the needs of manufacturing capital. However it was also essential to meet laboursʼ demand for rising living standards. In the analysis of contemporary city planning the study emphasize changing conditions: such as adjustment to the global division of labour and influence of rent oriented capital. Urban sociology is also criticized for idealizing postwar city planning in the wake of contemporary unequal urban development. Finally the study is an attempt to periodize and understand how capital constantly changes and adjusts the urban space according to its needs.
