Developing a functional understanding of mechanics, in accordance with canonical physics, has proven to be one of the most difficult challenges faced by students. In this report the development and implementation of conceptual labs in mechanics will be described. It is shown that educational design combining appropriate use of interactive technologies, handson and carefully designed instructions can foster a functional understanding of the involved physics. It is also shown that the educational implementation is crucial and that the outcome is not determined by the use of a certain educational technology.swe
