Abstract

For my masterproject I have designed a typeface for the Gothenburg City Library. Out of the typeface, who for the time being consists out of 13 characters, I have made a logotype for the library. I have applied the logotype as a gigantic sign on the library roof, on stationary, business card, envelope, plastic shopping bag and on a bookmarker. The reason why I wanted to design a typeface for my master project is that I don’t know how to do it and I am curious about the whole thing. I also wanted to widen my experience in the typographic area so that my knowledge are more solid considering my forthcoming professional life as a graphic designer. I chose to work with the Gothenburg City Library as my hypothetical client because I wanted to work with some limitations. Upon that I am very fond of the Library and that makes it easy and fun to work with. My typeface shall communicate the Gothenburg City Library’s positive, friendly attitude and make people aware of its power and good, strong intentions. I spent the main part of the time drawing the typeface and that was also my goal with the project. The drawing and the designing of the letters were very interesting. During the project I have got many good tools and tricks suitable for making typefaces from both experts and classmates. I also invented some of my own and that makes me a bit proud of my self. The project has both expanded and advanced my knowledge in typography area.
