Chlorella oxygen pavilion concept and the symbiosis in design
(2013-02-20) Miklosi, Adam; Göteborgs universitet/HDK - Högskolan för design och konsthantverk; Göteborg University/HDK - School of Design and Crafts
Symbiosis is an interdependent lifestyle of two or more species. Both of the species enjoys the advantages of this co-op living. Could we use this efficient movement of the biology in a bigger scale from the perspective of design? Can we combine the innovations of the biotechnology with design? In my master thesis Im looking for an answer for this question. The chance to get fresh air will became a very frequented question in the future. How can the future urbanist breathe the necessary gas? My idea is a portable pavilion, which can be mounted in different places in the cities, metropolises based on the algae-human symbiosis. The chchlorella combines the advantages of the algae photosynthesis and oxygen therapy.

    Fleetwood
(2013-02-20) Failli, Rebwar; Göteborgs universitet/HDK - Högskolan för design och konsthantverk; Göteborg University/HDK - School of Design and Crafts
Fleetwood is a classical designed sofa. In addition to the smooth rounded wooden sections, the seat is designed with the objective to use a maximum of space and volume it’s occupying. Metal and wood, angles and curves, plain and colored surfaces are weaving together with the main goal to find the connections between a sitting and a storage furniture. A sofa is one of the largest pieces of furniture in a room and speaks volumes. My goal was to create a sofa rather then a storage furniture. This gives the project a chance to break new ground for usage in modern homes. I tried to include as many aspects of the problematic that could accrue in smaller apartments. Creating a piece of furniture is very much about solving a problem and meeting the human needs. A good sofa would be one that appears to be seamless in the space it occupies. The starting point of my degree project is a concept for storage of materials that we have around us. Everything from books, shoes, clothes and things that we have in our home.

Crescent evolve - Electric bike for youth
(2013-02-20) Lundin, Fredrik; Göteborgs universitet/HDK - Högskolan för design och konsthantverk; Göteborg University/HDK - School of Design and Crafts
The purpose of the project was to design an electric bicycle to offer the target group youth an attractive alternative to mopeds. The basis for the project was user studies in which young people were interviewed and observed in their daily environment. The project resulted in a product, designed with the focus of integrating the battery to the shape, to create a wholeness that is simple and intuitive.! The product is easy to use and operate, with an automatic transmission engine.! A smart modular system allows the user to choose design with mudguards, rear rack, or without. The battery design is based on "cradleto- cradle" to maximize the battery life and minimize environmental impacts. It was very fun and rewarding to have the opportunity to present the results for the youth who showed great interest in the product. The project was conducted in collaboration with Designit and Cycleurope.

To reject the world - to embrace the world
(2013-02-20) Bergström, Martin; Göteborgs universitet/HDK - Högskolan för design och konsthantverk; Göteborg University/HDK - School of Design and Crafts
Ever since Thomas More’s book Utopia was published in 1516, the utopian idea has not lost its topicality and has been strongly rooted in literature, art, film and architecture. Utopia can be seen as a state in which utopia allows a space for wishes, dreams and a desire for something better. In my degree project I have chosen to explore the historical utopian ideas to create a content that treats utopia on a subjective level. With visual communication as a starting point I have tried to fixate this state in a book. Along with a unique typeface designed from the Utopian alphabet images and text are woven together into a conceptual whole, creating new associations and interpretations

Reading echoes - narration and illustration
(2013-02-20) Arnesen, Marianne R.; Göteborgs universitet/HDK - Högskolan för design och konsthantverk; Göteborg University/HDK - School of Design and Crafts
The main theme of my thesis work has been the role of illustration. I wanted to challenge both its traditional role in relation to text and in terms of expression, through using an abstract expression rather than a figurative one. The purpose of this was mainly to widen the view of what illustration can be and what it can be used for. Through giving text and illustration equal terms of existence, the goal was to make them equally important. To achieve this I worked with two writers. They wrote to illustrate my images and I made images to illustrate their texts. This resulted in two chains of interpretations, one for each writer, each consisting of six images and six texts. The two series of images and texts were presented in two separate books.

Skörda - a concept for indoor growing
(2013-02-20) Bergström, Maria; Göteborgs universitet/HDK - Högskolan för design och konsthantverk; Göteborg University/HDK - School of Design and Crafts
In my project I have been focusing on facilitating and shorten the step for people who don’t have the knowledge, or have a small interest in cultivation, to dare to take the step to start growing vegetables. With the concept I want to simplify and in a joyful way show the possibilities to be able to grow a small yield of vegetables in a home environment. Growing is something people have done for thousands of years, but the last 50 years, a rapid change has occurred in how people live. More and more people are moving to the cities where cultivation is limited and in some cases impossible. To have a garden or allotment is a rare luxury in an increasing crowded urban environment. What has been the natural way of providing food for humans have been replaced with the supermarkets convenience, but the there is a longing to once again reconnect with our food’s origin. Product and system design, individual’s role in the community, simplicity, home growing and joyful.

Patient S. A body sterilizing device
(2013-02-20) Agnedal, Marcus; Göteborgs universitet/HDK - Högskolan för design och konsthantverk; Göteborg University/HDK - School of Design and Crafts
Hospital acquired infections and the complications associated with this are an increasing problem worldwide. New techniques and tools are needed to reduce the risk to acquire infection during hospitalisation. The present device has been designed with an aim to obtain a process in connection to surgery that provides a comprehensive and comfortable sterilization of the patient. The actual bactericidal effect is based on a relatively new technique – non-thermal plasma. The technique has been tested in laboratory settings with very promising effects on various bacteria. The design of the device has been focused on ergonomics, simpleness and reliability. The special regulatory requirements for medical devices have also been considered.

The place is the space is the time - En sittmöbel utifrån ett rumsligt perspektiv
(2013-02-20) Färlin, Kerstin; Göteborgs universitet/HDK - Högskolan för design och konsthantverk; Göteborg University/HDK - School of Design and Crafts

Through the looking glass. A design vision for publications in an era of massive fragmentation
(2013-02-20) Kim, Jungho; Göteborgs universitet/HDK - Högskolan för design och konsthantverk; Göteborg University/HDK - School of Design and Crafts
In the publishing industry where 0s and 1s have replaced an archaic material called paper as the primary form of distribution, the struggle to bring content from analog to digital has been frought with questions about how to create digital- native publications. Of existing solutions, most can be put into two camps; those that look like websites, and those that replicate print layouts on screen. Unfortunately, these approaches lessen the integrity of content by forcing it to live in the shell of a website sans consideration for editorial context, or are committing usability faux pas by simply mimicing print-like forms on a screen. Through the Looking Glass is a prototype concept for a true 21st century publication, from information architecture to design and development. This project was conducted at a time in between the app revolution - where publishers rushed en masse to deliver content via applications made for specific devices - and a return to the browser and open web as the preferred content delivery platform of choice for publishers. A key catalyst for a shift in interest back towards web sites or web apps for content delivery was the advent of responsive web design, or an approach to designing and developing sites that automatically adapted to the screens on which they were viewed. This method of creating a content delivery platform appears to be, after discussion with a number of professionals who have experience designing and building both native applications and web sites and web apps, less time consuming and certainly less frustrating when considering the necessity to distribute content across various screen resolutions, platforms, and devices while trying to reach design parity. Of course, the trade offs of moving to the web from apps aren’t 1:1, additional pros and cons to each approach exist and this project simply sheds light on some of those areas. The year 2012 is still just the beginning of the migration back to the browser for the publishing industry, and knowledge gained from this degree project will hopefully help to provoke thought on this subject and be carried forward in my own future endeavours.

Reading space. Möbel för läsning till Göteborgs nya stadsbibliotek
(2013-02-20) Granath, Annie; Göteborgs universitet/HDK - Högskolan för design och konsthantverk; Göteborg University/HDK - School of Design and Crafts
Reading space Furniture for reading for the new city library of Göteborg The main purpose of my project has been to inspire people to read books at the library. I wanted to create something very site specific and chose a room on the second floor of the new city library to work with. To be able to relax, feel inspired and to concentrate on reading, the visitors of the library need to experience a sense of security. My solution to the different conditions or problems in the room and the needs I identified is a seat hanging inside a frame. When sitting down in the seat, the frame is low enough to see over but it is still experienced as a private spatiality. The visitors can feel protected in their own space and still have an overlook and take part of the surroundings. By hanging belongings on the sides of the frame the visitors can affect the space and nest in their own room. The hanging seat with its flexible angle enables a relaxing movement and enhances the experience of reading. I wanted the seat to feel light and to strengthen the floating expression. I liked the idea of it being made by the same material that holds it up. The room is very exposed to the sun and I took advantage of that by creating a woven seat that forms patterns of shadows. The furniture, which is made of ash wood, rises from a grid system in the floor made by the same material. The grid forms paths between the furniture which slows down the movement in the room and enables a calmer atmosphere.

    CURIOSITY -> HARVEST
(2013-02-20) Linderoth, Karin; Göteborgs universitet/HDK - Högskolan för design och konsthantverk; Göteborg University/HDK - School of Design and Crafts

Silent machine. The resonance from the past
(2013-02-20) Lee, Eun Jae; Göteborgs universitet/HDK - Högskolan för design och konsthantverk; Göteborg University/HDK - School of Design and Crafts
What makes an object beautiful? Can the feelings inspired by such an object be analytically defined? If so, what kind of process is needed to do so? How can the subjective interpretation of “beauty” by a designer be communicated with the public? Furthermore, how can personally reflected view coexist with an industrial designer’s responsibility? These were the questions I brought out in the initial stage of research. In the present stage, I set up time and spatial background as though writing down a scenario, and explore these features. The journey to find “beauty” continues with an investigation of physical forms, illuminating immanent values, and moves toward emotional expression via design language. The story of the Machine Age began from a curiosity about aesthetics, and its meaning as one trial by reflecting the perspective of this age and then newly reinterpreting it. The aim of this study was to explore and to define concepts through the industrial artifact-“machine” motif. Furthermore, the investigation was based on materialistic features emphasized as a core subject. As a result of the whole process, it was embodied as a form of a functional product (tea services), and used to generate a new point of view on daily life. Specific research on one industrial product and the possibility of mass production in terms of external factors such as target users, usability, and marketability were exempted from the main focus.

    Re: Yarning
(2013-02-20) Horner, Eleonor; Göteborgs universitet/HDK - Högskolan för design och konsthantverk; Göteborg University/HDK - School of Design and Crafts
From a social perspective, I have been working on how to change current consumption patterns through a change in people's behavior and attitude towards their possessions. The concept is based on how we can value, care for, and preserve our belongings by using theories in the empathic design field. I have created a structure that allows people to become an active part of a creative process and create their own products. Through this commitment, an emotional relationship is built between the user and the product, and the product tends to gain a longer life. Based on a method to manufacture your own yarn by reusing old clothes, I want to provide the basic tools for an easy and playful way to build the knowledge needed to produce something useful.

Water distribution at marketplaces within urban environments in Kenya
(2013-02-20) Carlberg, Dan; University of Gothenburg/HDK - School of Design and Crafts; Göteborgs universitet/HDK - Högskolan för design och konsthantverk
In Kisumu, Kenya, there it is not a lack of water. There is not even a lack of safe drinking water. There is, however, a lack of affordable safe drinking water. The only safe drinking water available in Kisumu is bottled water, and the price of this is too high for the people of Kisumu to afford. To make investments on a private level is hard for the local people since most of them have a very limited economy. This is the reason why a new form of service is needed in Kisumu. A service that provides safe drinking water at a price that makes it economically accessible for the local residents. The service developed in this project consists of a ground water harnessing hand pump for public spaces. The pump has a visible water cleaning process, to make the people more aware and trust the water they consume. To access the water people pay a fee using sms. The service is owned by the 29 economical unions at the Jubilee Market and the fees paid are used by these unions to locally maintain the system. The most relevant keywords for this project are: waterdistribution, servicedesign, developing countries, Lifesaver systems and groundwater

Concrete - en mönsterkollektion för modetextilier
(2013-02-20) Andersson, Susanne; University of Gothenburg/HDK - School of Design and Crafts; Göteborgs universitet/HDK - Högskolan för design och konsthantverk

Peaktime - a digital communication concept
(2013-02-20) Haberkorn, Caroline; University of Gothenburg/HDK - School of Design and Crafts; Göteborgs universitet/HDK - Högskolan för design och konsthantverk
Since the opportunities to connect with each other independently from time and space are increasing we are running the risk of losing control over our own time and get permanently stressed. Peaktime is an application concept that enables us to decide over our reachability and by that gives us the chance to take time off whenever we want.

Ma Famille - narrative approaches in play
(2013-02-20) Ma, Cong; University of Gothenburg/HDK - School of Design and Crafts; Göteborgs universitet/HDK - Högskolan för design och konsthantverk
Ma famille is a hat design project for role play. It is a group of characters, they create a small family. There are 5 hats in total, and they were designed as creatures who has different personalities. Ma famille was designed for a more open and abstract way of expressing character and moods. There is no fixed meaning and stories for any of them. You might not recognize anything familiar from them at first, you have to search, touch and wear them to find out what they are for you. There were lots of inspiration came from children. There are several workshops carried out through the process, and had big influence on the design decision later. Ma famille was designed for the interaction between children and adults, for play and also for balancing power between adult and kids. The main focus of this project is about identity construction and non-linear story telling. The material, colour and tactility was chosen and designed as a whole experience.
