ICT in project work ‐ a comparative study in information seeking as a social practice

Abstract
Our study emanates from a socio‐cultural perspective on learning and aim to describe and compare two different upper secondary school classes and their work with information literacy as a social practice in project work and their use of ICT (information and communication technologies). The questions at issue in the study are; how the pupils handle information seeking processes, what differences and similarities can be observed in the two social practices and which consequences these differences have in an project work environment. Our choice of research methods to collect data consists of both observations and interviews with pupils and teachers. The interviews performed in the study can be categorized as qualitative interviews, and in addition we recorded and took notes during the interviews and transcribed the material. The study shows the importance of a good learning environment when it comes to working with information seeking processes, that the instructor’s role is of outmost importance and that the pupils fundamental knowledge of information seeking processes and their information literacy are key success factors when it comes to project work linked to ICT to be productive. Further results show that small variations in these factors can cause big differences when it comes to the outcome of the way to work. If these above mentioned aspects are taken into consideration, it is far more likely that the interactions between all involved participants will inspire the pupils to become more active when it comes to their learning process, than in a more traditional learning environment. A well thought thru and working project work linked to ICT is beneficial for the pupils when it comes to preparing them for today’s information society. The study is of importance because it can be used as inspiration and as a foundation for further research that can contribute to the schools ability to keep up with the development of society and give pupils good preparedness for a future in a society with a massive flow of information. The results are discussed in relation to the theories which are given in the background chapters and in light of the aspects that we mean are of interest when it comes to further research.
