Abstract
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a safe and painless diagnostic method. The patient may become concerned, suffer from anxiety and experience the examination as unpleasant. Detailed information and a good treatment can reduce anxiety and distress for the patient. The purpose of this study was to illuminate the patient’s experiences in connection to MRI, and to describe the patients needs for information and treatment. Five articles were found in the databases PubMed and Cinahl, and the rest of the articles were found through manual search. The articles were analyzed using a content analysis on the basis of their purpose, method and result according to Willman and Stolts (2002) quality assessments of qualitative and quantative studies. The results show that the patient was very anxious, experienced high anxiety and discomfort before the MRI examination. It is therefore very important that the radiology staff invests in a good nursing care that will contribute to the patient feeling secure and taken care of seriously. To give a detailed information and respond with empathy can reduce anxiety and distress for the patient.
