Kimono - bevarad tradition i utställningskontext

Kimono - preserved tradition in exhibition context

Sammanfattning
The kimono is a simply cut costume with a very advanced tradition of the wearer, which I hope to communicate through this essay. The long historical bakground of the kimono can give a better understanding of its construction and its contexts as well as its individual conditions, all is to be taken in consideration before exhibiting the kimono. Relevant studies in litterature has been applyed within these subjects, which are accounted for primarily in the second and third chapter of this essay. The essay contains a study of the kimono with a strict delimitation towards four symbolic wearers, the subject is then further discussed in relation to the different kind of installations at exhibits. In the fourth part of the essay two educational study visits will function as a supplementary study for the litterature studies meantioned earlier. These study visits are realised in order to give different solutions to how an exhibition of kimonos can be carried through, and to show different approaches of the same costume. These thoughts and procedures are important experiences, since the kimono is a subject that isn't normally discussed within the scientific contexts. My goal is to inspire others to exhibit the kimono with these thoughts in mind. I also hope to spread light over the very complex perspectives that comes with studying and exhibiting the traditional Japanese costume. Its history, wearer and material qualities should all be equally considered important when planning future exhibits of the kimono. In this way one can show the kimono both as a social historical interesting object as well as an advanced piece of craftsmanship.
