Abstract

Which theological and rhetorical functions may the naming ἱεξάηεπκα of the recipients have had in First Peter? This paper provides a theological and rhetorical analysis of the use of ἱεξάηεπκα in First Peter. Theological background is provided through intertextual research on its occurences in the Septuagint (Ex 19:6; 23:22 and 2 Macc 2:17). Analysis of the theological and rhetorical functions of ἱεξάηεπκα in First Peter builds on rhetorical methods, and predominantly the work of professor Lauri Thurén. This study shows that the recipients are strangers dealing with a situation of persecution and internal conflict. In this situation the naming ἱεξάηεπκα functions as an important identity marker in a complex of identity markers belonging to the people of Israel. These are purposely used by the author in his parenetic strategy to provide strength and courage to the recipients through the covenant of God, the experience of Israel, and the coming to Christ (1 Peter 1:3-2:10). The function of ἱεξ ηεπκα is developed in new and certain ways and is given Christological impact. The use is also parenetically designated to have real consequences in the situation of the recipients in relation to God, the unbelieving community and when facing persecutors. This paper shows that the theological and rhetorical use of ἱεξ ηεπκα in First Peter is of greater importance in the letter as whole than what easily can be discovered.
