SHORT DESCRIPTION: On the 17th October 1961, a demonstration of Algerian immigrants against the French-Algerian war, took place in Paris. The Algerian independence movement FLN had called up for this demonstration. Two weeks earlier a nightly curfew for Frenchman of Algerian origin in the Paris region was enacted. Although the demonstrators was non violent, the Paris police, under the command of Maurice Papon, murdered from 200 to 350 demonstrators. The official record stood at three dead. To maintain this version, those who protested were forced silent by the French government. The journalist Michel Honorine later reported to the newspaper 'Le Monde': "The morning after the 17th, I knew of the events. Together with some colleagues, we asked what the editors would publish? We got the answer, that everything will be forgotten in a few days." Almost all the photos of the violence disappeared. Only 'Témoignages chrétien' published clear images, made by the photographer Elie Kazan that night.
