The purpose of this master thesis is to investigate what qualities and skills you need to be a professional orchestra violinist. The thesis consists of qualitative research interviews with professional orchestra violinists where I discuss issues such as adjusting to the group, leading, to give feedback, orchestral work and environment and inspiration. In addition to the interviews I use my own reflections and experiences concerning orchestral work, and my observations during project weeks at University of Gothenburg symphony orchestra. In order to get a job in an orchestra you are expected to not only be an accomplished violinist, but also to have orchestral experience and function well in the orchestra both musically and socially. Even though a person might be an exceptional violinist, one may not be suited for, or have the required skills to play in a professional orchestra. In this project I am trying to identify why this happens and what you need in order to be successful.sv
