Abstract

Building a bridge between the quantative and qualitative research fields on public opinion on the European Union I develop a typology of EU-attitudes based on theories of how party positions on the EU are structured. The typology applies to public opinion and is built on a two dimensional theoretical model where one dimension represent the opinion on the current membership in the European Union and the other dimension represents the opinion on European integration. The typology consists of five categories encompassing not only strong opinions on the membership and desired direction of the European integration, but moderate and indifferent opinions. The purpose of the typology is to serve as uniform measure of EU-attitudes in the general population to be used as a dependent and independent variable in the study of public opinion in the European Union.
