A Beach
Summary
The first solo show of Klara Källström and Thobias Feldt curated in Sweden. It focused on their work A Beach, first published as a book, but now developed and expanded to the format of an exhibition.
Description of project
In Klara Källström and Tobias Fäldt’s collective work A Beach fragments of tiles, found on a beach in Jaffa, become the starting point for a multilayered story. The findings are leftovers of houses that used be there, but which have been demolished and used as filling material for the construction of a new beach. Similarly to repressed experiences, the fragments are brought back as a reminder of what has once existed.
How the place and the buildings looked like in 1880s is depicted in a photograph by the French photographer Félix Bonfils – one of many European photographers who, during this time, was active in the Middle East producing pictures and albums for the early tourist industry. An original of Bonfils’ photographs is one many parts that make up the work, which also contains replicas of the tiles, historical postcards from Jaffa, new prints by Källström and Fälds, and an artist book. Together the parts form a web of references that portrait how the different layers of past and present coexist and clash with each other.
The choice and context of the antique store as the exhibition venue is important. An antique store is a place where objects from other times and places are taken care of and find new owners and contexts. The works by Källström and Fäldt are also addressing questions about how cultural and economic values are created through artistic choices and transformations, and by the space where it all takes place. Skaj Antique store is one of the leading in Sweden and has been run by the same Jewish family since three generations. The show was curated by me and my colleague Joakim Geiger. We found the space and made the selection of works and the installation with the artists. I wrote the text in the folder and moderated the public artist talk.
