Abstract

This study highlights the value of fruit tree preservation and the importance of caring for old fruit trees using authentic methods in Äskhults cultural reserve. The study concerns the fruit trees of Äskhult, focusing mainly on Jönsas garden. A map from 1825 shows that Jönsas garden had the same basic design as it has today. The purpose of this study is to create a maintenance plan for the fruit trees in Jönsas garden, based on conservation guidelines, historical maintenance methods and use. The research methods used for this study have been literature reviews, a site visit and interviews with people who work with trees in historical environments. The results show that the tree stock can be rejuvenated by sowing and grafting in Äskhult. The existing plant material can be grafted onto modern rootstocks in order to ensure the preservation of the authentic genetic material, but these new grafted trees should not be planted in Äskhult. The study has also resulted in a description of how the trees can be planted, placed and propagated. The conclusion of the study is that it is necessary to spend a significant amount of time on the maintenance of a cultural heritage site, and a long term plan is essential. The compilation of these results forms the basis for the maintenance plan.
