This study examines relationships between communicative participation, degree of stuttering, intelligibility and acceptability in adults who stutter. Data previously collected from 35 people who stutter was used for the variables communicative participation, obtained with the Overall Assessment of the Speaker's Experience of Stuttering; degree of stuttering, calculated with the Stuttering Severity Index for Children and Adults, third edition; and intelligibility, measured with the Swedish Test of Intelligibility. Speech samples from 34 adults with stuttering and five adults without stuttering, were used in assessing acceptability. Thirty untrained listeners rated acceptability on a scale constructed by the authors. A significant correlation was found between the degree of stuttering and acceptability, as well as between intelligibility and acceptability. No correlations were found between communicative participation and other variables. This suggests that communicative participation may be affected by parameters outside of those examined.sv
