Buttons at Bay Area

Sammanfattning
During three performances in the San Francisco Bay Area three musicians are performing free improvisations and compositions by composers such as Miles Davis, and Anthony Braxton on electronic and acoustic instruments under the name ”Buttons”.
Beskrivning av projektet
During a series of performances in November in the San Francisco Bay Area the three musicians Tom Djll, Per Anders Nilsson, and Gino Robair performed with electronic and acoustic instruments under the name ”Buttons”. The point of departure is free improvisations as well as performing pre-composed material by composers such as Miles Davis, Anthony Braxton and Sun Ra. A basic tenet during these occasions was to perform, and to explore three different contexts, at three different spaces: Tom’s Place in Berkeley is actually the living room of Tom Duff, who regularly opens it up for public concerts. It attracts a regular group of spectators who is familiar with free improvisation and experimental music. CNMAT (Center for New Music And Technology) is part of University of California, Berkley and offers a small stage in an academic institution devoted to research in new music. ATA (Artists Television Access) is a non profit resource and venue that supports independent video artists, and more of an “activist” venue with it’s roots in the 70s. The core of the performed music consisted, as it turned out, to be free improvisations, interleaved with composed sections, which acted as a mean for contrast, as well as inspiration and springboard for further improvisations. One exception was the concert at ATA, where the group was explicitly asked to improvise to the screening of new video work by San Francisco based artist Faith Arazi.
