Imagining owning something A study of imaginary ownership of objects and their perceived value from the perspective of The mere ownership effect

Previous studies indicate that individuals perceive objects as more valuable if they are owned by said individuals. A study was conducted to examine whether this effect was possible to replicate when the objects as well as the ownership of them was imaginary. 227 participants which were divided into two groups, completed one of two different online based surveys. The first survey tested the valuation of objects during imaginary ownership, the second survey tested the valuation of objects without imaginary ownership. The result showed no significant difference between the two groups. This could be because of the short exposure time to the imaginary owning as well as the fact that the effect studied could be measurable in another form of value, for example attractiveness.
