Ett medborgarnas Europa? En kvantitativ studie om euroskepticism bland danska och svenska medborgare

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyse how Euroscepticism among Danish and Swedish citizens can be explained. Previous research has mainly focused on different theories that explain Euroscepticism among citizens. Researchers argue that Euroscepticism either interrelate with anti-immigration opinions or interrelate with globalization and individual factors such as education-level and income-level, for example. My purpose is to broaden our understanding for Danish and Swedish eurosceptical attitudes. By using a linear regression analysis, I am able to analyse whether anti-immigration opinions and individual factors relate to Euroscepticism. By doing so, I can compare attitudes between Danish and Swedish citizens and conclude if they differ. The conducted linear regression analysis indicates a connection between anti-immigration opinions and Euroscepticism among Danish and Swedish citizens, however, this connection is strongest in Denmark. In addition to this, the results indicate a relation between individual factors and Euroscepticism as well. Therefore, anti-immigration and Euroscepticism cannot be explained as the sole interrelation, as there are other (individual) factors that also can be seen in relation to Euroscepticism.
