Politisk jämställdhet – vägen till minskad korruption?
Political gender equality - the path to reduced corruption?
Abstract
The main purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of political gender equality on corruption levels worldwide. The following hypotheses are examined: (1) The effect of political gender equality on corruption levels depend on the country’s income level and is stronger in high income countries. (2) Political gender equality and corruption levels have a significant negative relationship even when controlling for liberal democracy. We include the control variable, net ODA received in percent of GNI, in our regression to control for a relationship that is not considered in previous studies. Also, we use an interaction term between political gender equality and GDP per capita. The regressions will be estimated by the fixed effects model. Our results show that increasing political gender equality will decrease corruption levels but only up to a certain GDP per capita level. Also, the effect is consistent even when controlling for the significant effect of liberal democracy.
