TURKISKA UPPFATTNINGAR OM EU - en kvalitativ textanalys av ledarartiklar ur den turkiska nyhetstidningen Sabah

Abstract
This paper belongs in the research field of the external perceptions of the European Union. With Turkey as the case focus, the material consists of editorials from the daily newspaper Sabah. The purpose has been to identify how the EU is perceived in accordance with role theory, and detect changes over time between 2006 and 2016. Furthermore, the purpose has been to compare the findings with previous research. As a candidate country for almost two decades, the economic and political ties between the two entities are important. This study is relevant since it widens the understanding of the EU’s role in the world. The results of the study show that the EU perception in Turkey has changed from a generally positive view, to a generally negative view. The findings mainly confirm previous research regarding the mapped out roles of the EU, however it gives a more nuanced view of the EU from a Turkish perspective.
