Situated Collective Publishing

Sammanfattning
The international two-day encounter "Publishing as Social Practice" discusses collective and situated publishing strategies and investigates the implicit power structures of institutional systems of production, distribution and consumption. With contributions by Mela Davila Freire, Carla Zaccagnini, Thomas Millroth, Olivia Plender, Eva Weinmayr. Convened by Helena Fernández-Cavada in collaboration with Felicia Tolentino, curator at Ystad Art Museum.
Beskrivning av projektet
My presentation "Situated, collective Publishing" presents a critical reflection on how the calculative logic of quantification dominating our current systems of evaluation publication is often framed as “output”, as a discrete object that can be measured and counted. In an attempt to formulate an alternative approach I will propose to shift our understanding of publication from being counted as an “output” to being valued as an “input” — to understand publication as a verb (a process) rather than a noun (a finished, discrete object). Using the example of “Let’s Mobilise: What is Feminist Pedagogy?” I will discuss the potential of such a shift for intersectional feminist knowledge practices, where publishing becomes a process of co-constructing meaning including all moments of production, dissemination, and use. My contribution to the two-day international encounter "Publishing as a Social Practice" is giving a concrete example of an experiment of collective publishing and its conflicts when it comes to the request of attribution in order to produce metadata for the systems of archiving and storing. The contribution is in dialogue with other "inputs" from Mela Davila Freire, Olivia Plender, Thomas Millroth and Carla Zaccagnini, attempting to brainstorm institutional approaches to collect, democratise and activate an archive of printed matter and introduce strategies on how a collection can involve a neighboring community, or procedures where the archive is rewritten and activated periodically with the users. This international encounter is convened by visual artist Helena Fernández-Cavada in collaboration with Felicia Tolentino, curator at Ystad Art Museum.
