dc.description.abstract | The purpose of this thesis is to give a description of the functions of the Japanese nominal
predicate no da, which in short is used to signal that the participants of a communication are
already aware of the information presented. However, the thesis´ main point of interest lies in
the analysis of the choice of words when no da is translated into Swedish.
To find sufficient answers, the research was in part conducted using an already existing
framework of information presented in research concerning the translation of English
constructions into no da. The actual analysis itself was carried out by reading through a
Japanese novel and comparing sentences where this final construction could be found with the
corresponding sentences in the Swedish translation. The results were then analysed, taking the
different functions into consideration, and presented accordingly. They revealed that in most
cases where it was found no da was not translated in any way, but where it was, the most
commonly used translations consisted of the Swedish constructions det är… som, det är det
att, det är så att and hur kommer det sig att, along with the adverbs egentligen and faktiskt,
and the particles ju and väl. The object chosen for analysis was Haruki Murakami´s novel Nejimakidori kuronikuru.
