Choice Bubble
Sammanfattning
Choice Bubble is an audio sculpture placed
within the 2019 Way Out West festival’s
grounds, and commissioned as part of the
SvenskLive safe festivals campaign called
“Let’s hear it from the crowd.” The sculpture
alighted a moment of singular or small group
reflection on the power we each hold to make
choices.
Med stöd av
Produced by SvenskLive and funded by Public

collaborated with Region West Police,
Länsstyrelsen Västra Götalands län,
Göteborgs City, West Pride, Center for

Beskrivning av projektet
Choice Bubble was made by the creative
collective STUDIO ALIGHT, which consists of
Samantha Hookway, Fredrik Garneij and
Christofer Kanljung. This audio sculpture
was part of the group show of other visual
and non-performance works placed within the
2019 Way Out West festival’s grounds.
The work is described via the studio’s
website as:
”Bubbles surround us. Our minds make them, the
system envelopes us in them, our friends create
them, and our enemies use them against us. These
bubbles, the ones that, at times, surround us in
ways beyond our control, are, also,
opportunities to reflect on how we each
individually have the power to choose. Thus,
this audio sculpture alights a moment of
singular or small group reflection on the power
we each hold to make choices.”
Choice Bubble is a sculptural installation
consisting of two directional speakers,
framed by two over-sized owl houses. The
speakers are pointed to a small area whereas
the audio is heard in about 2m x 2m area.
This area is between other vendors and was
designed to be a brief reflective
interruption while walking up to one of the
stages in the festival. The audio was made
by making a two-channeled dialog bouncing
onto the path from two sides. The voices
used were trained with deep-learning
techniques and in particular, the Amazon
Polly catalog of voices. The script, played
out via the two audio streams became a
constantly-evolving stream of conscious
reflection.
The audio’s script was derived by taking the
“Let’s Hear it from the Crowd” campaign
poster’s copy text to life via spoken word.
The audio text was also sourced from
different attitudes revealed about the use
of drugs at festivals found in forums
online, and then, on top of those forums, a
greater reflection of what is a safe
“bubble” was exposed in the work. Bubbles of
our social medias, bubbles of our political views, bubbles of our social constructions
and bubbles of our biases all became active
within the spoken arguments performed by
two-sided speakers.
This audio sculpture was part of the group
show of other visual and non-performance
works placed within the musical festival’s
grounds. Documentation of the piece and how
it interacted within the campaign can be
seen at this link. Feedback from both Way
Out West’s staff and the collaborators of
the “Let’s Hear it from the Crowd” campaign
was positive to the 2019 piece and even
there is a hint towards work in 2020. Hence,
after exhibiting this piece at Way Out West
2019, STUDIO ALIGHT has entered into
discussions about joining SvenskLive’s
Campaign in 2020 which includes Way Out West
2020 and possibly other festivals.
