This study explores emotions involved in receiving a diagnosis of ADHD in adulthood. The article used interviews and was based on sociological theory of emotions. Questions answered in the study were as follows: What are the main emotions associated with receiving an ADHD diagnosis in adulthood? Do emotions related to self and self's place in society differ before and after diagnosis? If so, in what way? How can people who have received an ADHD diagnosis in adulthood contribute to our understanding of the significance of diagnoses in society today?. Findings suggests that the main emotions associated with receiving ADHD diagnosis in adulthood consist of emotions such as relief, safety and elation. The emotions that dominates before diagnosis are largely guilt, shame and sorrow while self experiences after the diagnosis imply greater acceptance and recognition of the self. The article draws a complex picture of the significance of receiving a diagnosis today. Diagnoses does not just mean stigma and shame but also relief, acceptance and safety.sv
