EUROPEISK IDENTITET EN KVANTITATIV STUDIE OM HUR EUROPEISK INTEGRATION PÅVERKAR GRADEN AV EUROPEISK IDENTIFIKATION I LÄNDER

Sammanfattning
Despite numerous papers and research on how different aspects are affecting levels of European identification, there are relatively few studies that are scrutinizing how European integration and how different levels of European integration are affecting levels of European identification. This research fills that gap. By using data from International Social Survey Programme from 2003 and 2013, I compared the average level of national and European identification in European countries. I also did a multiple regression analysis testing the correlation between different categories related to European integration with levels of European identification. The results show that individuals who feel high levels of identification with their town or region feel high levels of European identification. Individuals who live in countries that are included in the Schengen area feel stronger European identification than individuals who live in countries that are not included in the Schengen area. The results also showed that individuals who live in “older” member states or in countries within the Eurozone have a weaker sense of European identification than individuals who live in “newer” member states or individuals who live in countries outside the Eurozone.
