Traditionell timring i lod, våg och vinkel med kroppen som instrument

Traditional log house building with body, touch and sight as measuring tools

Sammanfattning
This thesis takes a look at how traditional log houses can be built with only the use of old measurements (by using its bodily counterparts such as thumbs, forearms and feet) combined with the two senses touch (by building with an axe) and sight for maintaining the structure and its parts plumb, level and also having correct or perpendicular angles. It is also tested how far the craftsman can take this method to make the structure wind proof, and therefore warm to live in, since that’s the highest form of precision in log house building. There are currently different researchers, in multiple fields, that are exploring the different kinds of knowing such as sight, touch, hearing, spacial comprehension, emotion, etc. that craftsmen (and women) can make use of. None of which have taken a look at traditional log house building. This thesis tests this in a practical setting by building a small log house frame. The researcher only uses traditional means of building, so the structure is completely hand made with only two different kinds of axes, a knife, an older form of scribing tool, two log dogs, a manual boring tool (two were tested) and a large wooden club. The tests show that with the use of these so-called simple tools, old measurements relating to their bodily counterpart, and through the senses of touch and sight a functional log house can be built with a high form of craftsmanship.
