Substratblandningar för krukodlade perenner: en fallstudie av två plantskolisters val av odlingssubstrat
Substrate mixes for container-grown herbaceous perennials – A case study of two perennial nursey grower’s choice of growth media
Abstract
Container grown herbaceous perennials require substrates that differ from soil grown ones in
terms of drainage, bulk density and pore space. A case-study of two experienced nursery
grower’s substrate mixes have been done through interview to understand their thoughts and experiences regarding substrate mixes. A study of literature regarding the subject of substrate mixes for container grown perennials has been done to get a further understanding on the subject. The two grower’s substrate mixes differ greatly from one another in relation to physical aspects such as bulk density, pore space and drainage as well as certain ingredients where one of the grower’s substrate is mixed with grit and sand. Their nursery businesses don’t share structure, distribution of products, how they keep their plants over winter or in watering techniques. An interpretation of the two substrate mixes have been made to understand how they relate to recommendations in the studied literature. A comparison between the nurseries and the grower’s thoughts, ideas and horticultural craft has been made. The comparisons show that substrate mixes can possibly vary in structure and reach the same results in terms of beautiful and hardy plants. However, a certain substrate mix can’t be taken out of its context and the nursery’s overall structure such as wintering, watering and distribution must be taken to account.
