”Frågor kommer och de måste få komma” – Lärarperspektiv på sex och samlevnad i årskurs F-3
”Questions come up and they need to come up” – Teacher perspectives on sexual education in primary school
Abstract
The present study investigates the views of teachers on sexual education in Swedish primary
schools. Recent findings suggest that teachers do not include enough sex educational contents
in their teachings and because of that, national curriculums are due to change. However, earlier
studies focus mainly on secondary school teachers. The aim of this study is therefor to include
primary school teachers into this research field and map out their perspectives on current sex
education practices. The research questions related to this aim are as follows: how do primary
school teachers view the contents of sex education and how do they claim to work with content
related to sex education in their teachings and daily practices? The method used for this
qualitative study was semi structured interviews. Six licensed teachers were interviewed and the data were processed using a thematic analysis. Important findings include that primary school teachers do in fact work extensively with sex education in their daily practices, contrary to what previous studies suggest. The results also show that the participating teachers consider the subject area to be vital, but lack a communal language and knowledge of how to express
their practices and thoughts to their peers.
