Stanningsspåren efter en okänd timringsprocess

Stanning – the tool tracks after an unknown log-building process

Abstract
This thesis takes a look at an unknown way of log building regarding the order of the craft procedures in the making of a Swedish log joint labeled as saddle notch. The new craft procedure has been given light due to the findings of odd gaps in different log frames, giving rise to the suspicion that they are in fact part of an unknown crafting method. Hence a theory of the method was formed, it is however just in its infancy and remains to be tested through practical experiments. The aim of the survey is to evaluate it by a reconstruction of the crafting process itself through the combined methods of full scale reconstruction paired with a theoretical dialog regarding the method and its inherent logics. The evaluation is focused around the practicality and efficiency of the crafting method, the usage of the gaps in said method and also the correlation of the two. By the extensive trials performed in the survey of the craft procedure we can conclude that it is possible that the gaps in the log frames might very well be remnants of this said crafting method. The study did however also conclude that the gaps on the log frames could also be part of some other crafting method and does not necessarily have to coincide with the method being tested in the thesis. Lastly, we can also conclude that the crafting method is highly practical given its minimal demand on tool requirements and its effectiveness regarding how challenging and time consuming it is, and has therefore a place in every log-house constructor’s toolbox regarding how a saddle notch can be produced.
