dc.description.abstract | In lightoftheCovid-19pandemic,oneofthemostcommoninterventions
used bycountrieswastoshutdownschoolsinthehopeofmitigatingvirus
transmission. However,theeffectivenessofschoolclosuresstilllacks
consensus intheliteratureduetotheseeminglydifficulttaskofestimating
the causaleffectofclosingschools.Thispapercontributestotheliterature
byprovidingbothempiricalevidenceoftheeffectofschoolclosuresand
methodologicalguidancetoisolatetheeffectofschoolclosures.Weexploit
variationsinschoolclosuresacrossmunicipalitiesbyutilizinganovel
dataset onSwedishlowersecondaryschoolclosurestoidentifythecausal
effect usingasyntheticcontrolmethod.Wefindevidencethatclosing
schoolshadasmallandsignificanteffectonthemunicipaltransmission
of Covid-19.Inaddition,weshowthatonlyholdingallstudentsathome
