Omedvetna Nationalister? En studie om reproducerandet av nationalism i Sverige
Abstract
The purpose of this thesis is to look further into the reproduction of the idea / dream of the
nation state. The next Swedish election will be held in 2022 and one of the parties that is
running, named Sverigedemokraterna (SD), is getting more leverage in the parliament and
also gaining more faith in the Swedish civil society. By reviewing Sverigedemokraternas
values that are stated on their homepage, one can see that they have political agenda with a
strong focus on reducing migration into Sweden and to preserve what they consider to be the
correct version of Sweden. This thesis will aim understand the reproduction of nationalism
though everyday newspapers in regards to this one can speculate which direction the political
life is developing in Sweden. By using two different types of nationalism; banal nationalism
and statsnationalism, together with Chantal Mouffes (2008) theoretical framework of the
creation of social discourse this study will try to answer how everyday newspapers perceive
Sweden as a nation and reproduce nationalism. By doing a critical discourse analysis of five
Swedish newspapers that are freely available for anyone with internet access, this study aims
to identify how nationalism is portraited in the everyday life. Which can help us understand
how the political is evolving, but can also help us speculate about questions such as why
Sverigedemokraterna have increased in number. The study shows that there is a connection
between the grammar and words used when talking about security and foreigners. The result analysis demonstrated the complexity of reproduction in nationalism and its connection with
the creation of the social discourse. What this study shows is that there is an increased strive
for a more controlled and secured Sweden. The articles used in the study all use different
wording, but are all coherent with the desire of change.
