FRÅN BRAND TILL MINNE Kommunal kulturmiljöplanering av ett svårhanterligt kulturarv. Fallstudie: Backabranden
From fire to memory Difficult heritage in municipal administration of urban planning and heritage studies. The case of the fire at Backaplan 1998.
Abstract
The study aims to increase knowledge about how difficult environments can be handled in
cultural environment planning at a municipal level. The memorial site and monument to the victims of the fire at Backaplan are a testimony to the disaster on October 29, 1998. The place can be considered a difficult heritage because the consequences of the fire have left deep
traces on people. This degree project, sheds light on how Difficult heritage is handled in municipal administration of urban planning and heritage studies. Through a case study, the study intends to investigate in particular how the memory of the fire disaster is manifested over
time and above all in the light of Gothenburg’s ongoing urban transformation project at
Backaplan. The case study intends to make the discussion visible and intends to investigate how the issue of handling the fire premises has developed over time (1998-2022). A timeline has been made that describes how the issue of conservation has developed over time and
illustrated how involved actors focus on and how they act. Difficult heritage activates the need for citizen dialogue and careful handling of sites.
