This study investigates gender disparities in media representation, specifically focusing on the space given to male and female experts in Swedish newspapers. Despite a population evenly split between genders, other studies reveal a notable underrepresentation of female experts in the media. Aligned with Sweden's commitment to Agenda 2030 and its goal to achieve gender equality, this study aims to explore the extent of representation for experts of different genders in news articles and possible variations across newspapers and news genres. Through a quantitative content analysis, the study examines the space given to male and female experts, measured in number of characters, image frequency, and placement. The research questions aim to uncover differences in representation within newspapers and across various news topics. Results indicate that, overall, female experts are less frequently featured and receive slightly less space compared to male experts. Västerbottens-Kuriren stands out for its commitment to gender equality, providing a more balanced representation and space allocation for experts of different genders, although they too show a slight bias towards male experts. Aftonbladet, on the other hand, exhibits a significant imbalance, with female experts receiving less space and lower visibility in articles with multiple experts. Göteborgs-Posten shows some variation in space allocation, with female experts receiving almost equal space but generally less in articles with multiple experts. Svenska Dagbladet reveals an imbalance, with female experts often receiving less space, especially when they are the sole expert, but on the other hand, female experts are more often included in pictures. In conclusion, the study emphasizes the persistent gender disparities in media representation, stressing the need for continued efforts to address these imbalances. The findings underscore the importance of promoting equal visibility and opportunities for both male and female experts in the media, aligning with broader societal goals of achieving gender equality, but also because of the fairness of equal opportunity.sv
